NFL Draft Live Thread

More photos » by Richard Drew - AP

'You realize, of course, that I'm now worth more than any of the banks traded on the NYSE right now?'

With Matthew Stafford signed -- 6 years, $78 million in Monopoly money, $41.7 million in real money -- the main source of drama for both the NFL and the SEC is resolved. But there is plenty more where that came from. Will Percy Harvin be high go high in the draft? Where does Knowshon Moreno sign? Is Mel Kiper's hair really a symbiotic organism?

The action really gets under way around 4 p.m. We'll be around.

BREAKING NEWS: Stafford goes No. 1

I know. Shocking.

Next up: Probably Andre Smith. Anyone’s guess who and where after that.

You are funny.

Only the Bungles were stupid enough.

Why watch the draft...

when you could be watching game 2 of Florida vs. South Carolina on Fox Sports South?

by The Feathered Warrior on Apr 25, 2025 4:28 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The way the game is going

you might be better off sticking with the draft.

by The Feathered Warrior on Apr 25, 2025 4:59 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That’s quite the recovery for his stock.

by peachy rex on Apr 25, 2025 4:55 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

And Oakland picks the “super-fast but otherwise underdeveloped WR no-one outside of his conference paid attention to until the draft hype starting building”… sometimes I love the draft.

Knowshon Moreno at No. 12 to the Broncos

Wow. Unexpected.

Regime change

Probably the clearest sign that Shanahan is no longer in Denver. The last thing he would ever do is take a running back in the first round.

by Year2 on Apr 25, 2025 5:55 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah, but Moreno had really tumbled post-combine

I’m surprised he went that high

UT's Ayers to Denver

No. 18. The SEC is on a roll.

by Year2 on Apr 25, 2025 6:07 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

There was quite an early run on OT… which passed Oher right by. Is he the biggest ‘faller’ right now?

by peachy rex on Apr 25, 2025 6:07 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I would say yes so far. We’ve been hearing for a year that he’d be a top 10 pick.

by Year2 on Apr 25, 2025 6:11 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Very surprising. I had heard nothing bad.

Now he looks like he might fall out of the first round.

Harvin watch is on now

Jeremy Maclin is basically Percy Harvin without the off-field issues. Maclin and Jackson will make a nice tandem for Philly.

Maybe Cleveland?

If Detroit takes a receiver here, there will be riots.

I’ve heard Minny floated as a possibility - for whatever that’s worth.

by peachy rex on Apr 25, 2025 6:17 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah, but that would confuse me

They had huge character issues a few years back, so with Harvin’s newfound reputation, I don’t know that there’s a match there. And their offense is befuddling.

Team Speed Kills. All SEC, all the time.

by cocknfire on Apr 25, 2025 6:19 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Perhaps they believe the issues are overblown - it’s more than a little odd when a high-profile guy develops a toxic reputation so suddenly (especially in the blogging/facebook/etc age, when every indiscretion gets out. If Harvin really does have such significant off-field issues, someone did a crackerjack job keeping them under wraps for three years.)

by peachy rex on Apr 25, 2025 6:24 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I don't disagree

I’d put Harvin second to Crabtree were I a GM. But a reputation is a reputation. Once you get it, it’s hard to shake.

Team Speed Kills. All SEC, all the time.

Welcome to the Lions, Matthew Stafford

Good offensive linemen on the board — and they go with a TE.

Team Speed Kills. All SEC, all the time.

by cocknfire on Apr 25, 2025 6:20 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

At least he’s a TE that can block and not one of those 250 lb receiver types.

by Year2 on Apr 25, 2025 6:22 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Well, Doc Saturday isn’t going to be a happy man tomorrow - a few days ago he wrote a post titled “Four ways the NFL Draft can make sense to a college fan”… and only one of them came to pass.

by peachy rex on Apr 25, 2025 6:22 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

There's a problem with the premise

The NFL Draft will never make sense to college fans. Scouts don’t start paying attention to these kids until halfway through their junior years. And then largely throw out anything that happens before the combine, where they evaluate “potential” instead of, you know, accomplishments.

Team Speed Kills. All SEC, all the time.

by cocknfire on Apr 25, 2025 6:25 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think he wrote it more in hope of a miracle than in actual anticipation of the draft making sense…

by Year2 on Apr 25, 2025 6:28 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

This could be interesting

Minnesota’s been burned with SEC receivers before (both of them, unfortunately, Gamecocks). If Harvin can balance out Peterson, it could help them. But — Tavaris Jackson?

Team Speed Kills. All SEC, all the time.

That is the fly in the soup bowl for Minny…

by peachy rex on Apr 25, 2025 6:33 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That’ll be the biggest thing holding him back.

It’s a little frustrating to hear all the talk about character issues with him since he didn’t have a single problem between high school and the combine. It’s like the three years in between didn’t count for a thing.

by Year2 on Apr 25, 2025 6:34 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

This is the NFL

Potentially two excellent drafts back-to-back for the Ravens, getting a QB and a LT. Newsome has a sterling reputation, and for good reason.

by cocknfire on Apr 25, 2025 6:42 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

A bit of an SEC run right now - obviously a bit of validation for last year’s Ole Miss, though you have to wonder how many teams can absorb losing two first-round linemen.

by peachy rex on Apr 25, 2025 6:43 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That's the real question mark

I think Oher is the bigger loss. The help he gave Snead cannot be overstated.

Team Speed Kills. All SEC, all the time.

by cocknfire on Apr 25, 2025 6:45 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

There are several high-profile QBs who are going to be playing behind much less formidable (or at least experienced) lines next year, and it will be very interesting to see how they do - Bradford and Snead are at the top of that list, I think. (Tebow’s there too, but even last year the line wasn’t as strong as it ought to have been on paper; certainly playing behind it was nothing like having Oher or the great wall of beef at OU.)

by peachy rex on Apr 25, 2025 6:51 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

So, who’s doing the “Aaron Rodgers Face” now that Oher is gone? Beanie and the surviving USC linebackers, maybe Laurinaitis?

by peachy rex on Apr 25, 2025 6:53 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Some of the notable SEC players still on the board

Jasper Brinkley
Antoine Caldwell
Jared Cook
Cornelius Ingram
Mohamed Massaquoi (Didn’t expect him to go on the first day, but he’s notable for SEC fans, IMO)
Kenny McKinley
John Parker Wilson (What? Not a first rounder?)

Things have really slowed down

I think Tennessee wanted Nicks and had a big struggle figuring out if they wanted Britt or not.

by Year2 on Apr 25, 2025 7:19 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah, Tennessee was another team that appeared to be big in the receiver market - lots of mocks had them taking Harvin. (In fact, Minny and Tenny have had a bit of a similar vibe - teams that are close enough to feel they’re one piece away from being real contenders.)

by peachy rex on Apr 25, 2025 7:23 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

They sure do - both of them do, in fact. But that’s true of fifteen to twenty teams a year, and god knows there’s never that many franchise QB candidates on the board… and a team with a really solid defence and enough firepower at other positions on offence can win with a stopgap QB. (Come on down, Trent Dilfer!)

by peachy rex on Apr 25, 2025 7:27 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

They’re in real trouble, absolutely… but man, it’s tough to get a “QB of the future” type picking at #30. And even if you’re willing to package picks and trade up (way up), this wasn’t a draft brimming with hot prospects at the position. Next year might be better…

by peachy rex on Apr 25, 2025 7:32 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Beanie goes to the desert - clearly the Zona brass don’t think Hightower is the long-term solution as a replacement for Edge.
