What Happened to Georgia?
As one of the posts I'm working on for the last week or so of season-in-review pieces, a question for all of us to ponder, and I'd like your feedback:
What happened to Georgia?
This was, let's remember, a national title and SEC East contender that finished 10-3 with ugly losses to Alabama and Florida and a heartbreaker to Georgia Tech. The Dawgs' best win is, what, a 24-12 bowl win over Michigan State?
I'm not saying this to tear down Georgia, though doing so has never bothered me. I was on the bandwagon, too; I had them No. 1 preseason.
So was it the injuries, particularly those on the line? Or was there something wrong that some of us (self included) just didn't see before the season began.
Your thoughts are welcome.
A FanPost gives the opinion of the fan who writes it and that fan only. That doesn't give the opinion more or less weight than any other opinion on this blog, but the post does not necessarily reflect the view of TSK's writers.

For what it's worth . . .
. . . here’s one man’s opinion.

A number of things
I agree with most of what Kyle said, and here’s a couple more.
A) Outside of A.J. Green and to a lesser extent Massaquoi, the receivers/TEs still had a case of the dropsies, something that has pervaded Georgia’s pass catchers for several years now.
B) Spectacular defensive breakdowns. When was the last time Georgia allowed at least 38 points in four of its last five regular season games? My guess would be “probably never.”
Re: the injuries… yes, they lost a lot. But guess what? Florida did too. They lost a starting safety, an all-SEC tight end, and they went through three different left guards at varying times. Not to mention Percy Harvin was in and out of the lineup again. Overall, the Gators lost over 100 player-games due to injury and still won the title.
If injuries really did Georgia in that badly, it speaks to some kind of deficiency in recruiting (perhaps cyclical, perhaps not, I don’t know) that will need to be addressed quickly.

Florida did not lose two left tackles either
I agree that Florida had some major injuries this year, but to compare the positions lost between Florida and Georgia is to compare apples and oranges. Florida lost skill players, but none of the big uglies on either side of the line. Georgia lost its best O-lineman before the season started, it’s best D-lineman on the 1st series of the season, and the O-lineman that replaced the aforementioned lineman later on in the season. Georgia never had its best linebacker, Ellerbe, healthy for any stretch of the season after he was hurt on the 1st series of the Alabama game. While I do not discount Florida’s injuries, you cannot discount losing your best players on each line and I do not think it speaks to “some kind of deficiency in recruiting”. Florida had a mean O-line this year and a mean pass rush. Georgia had neither and that was the major difference in the two teams this year.

UF’s pass rush was good but not great. Most of the Gators’ sacks were coverage sacks as a result of great secondary play. Even then, the secondary was all freshmen and sophomores. Remember that however young Georgia ended up being, Florida was younger.
And really, did the O-line really handicap Georgia that much? It blocked for the #15 rated passer in the country and paved the way for a 1,400-yard rusher. The offense scored 30 on Alabama and 42 on Georgia Tech. If you’re scoring that much and not winning, that’s not really an offensive problem.

And here I thought this was another basketball thread...
For those children who claimed they’ve been a fan of their favorite team all their life, or even since they were about four or five years old: bullshit. There’s always that certain event or certain player that draws to the sport and draws you to a team. For me, Nomar Garciaparra was that reason. - Nick Coviello: I Try To See Rocco, But All I Think Is Nomar; 1/9/09
