Although they played the toughest schedule in the country, winning eight games is a success for the Texas A&M Aggies in the first year of the Jimbo Fisher era. Their reward: A chance to break their three-bowl losing streak against the N.C. State Wolfpack.
While there may be a chip on the shoulder of Jimbo Fisher, two Aggies have their own ambitions. First, there’s Trayveon Williams. He needs 169 yards to set the single season rushing record for the Aggies. With an offense that’ll lean on him, he wants to make a big splash. Staying with the ground game, center Erik McCoy will be playing in the same game as Rimington Award Winner Garrett Bradbury. Although they will never play each other, McCoy will have to show out in order to be considered in that tier of lineman.
The Wolfpack enter the game at 9-3, having come out from a surprisingly strong ACC this year. Redshirt senior Ryan Finley is one of the best to play for NC State. With multiple 300-yard games through the air and 24 touchdowns, he has the ability to torch defenses as he pleases. Reggie Gallaspy is a 1000-yard rusher as well, having gone off for 220 yards last time around against East Carolina. The Wolfpack have a solid run defense, allowing ust 109.1 rush yards per game.
While the Aggies may be hungry, there are a few things that have to happen for them to win. Get Trayveon and the offense going early, The Aggies have put up 153 points in the past 3 games, with Trayveon doing a ton of damage in the victory over LSU. Kellen Mond has the ability to torch defenses through the air and on the dirt, so expect a couple option plays to start the game. Having racked up 3,000 yards through the air, Mond has shown time and again his ability to make teams pay.
Familiarity is something the Wolfpack have on the Aggie defense. Defensive coordinator Mike Elko previously worked at Wake Forrest and Notre Dame, teams that N.C. State has played before. The Aggies woes in the secondary could potentially be on display. It is Landis Durham’s job to disrupt Finley as much as possible.
The Aggies, although slightly favored, will be in a potential shootout on New Year’s Eve.
