So... the Tennessee Volunteers. They’re 0-2 to start the year after suffering rather debilitating and humiliating losses to both the BYU Cougars and the Georgia State Panthers. One is significantly more embarrassing than the other, and you don’t have to take too long to figure out which.
Nonetheless, the Vols are off to a very bad start. That can’t be argued. But surely... surely it can’t get that much worse, right? The Chattanooga Mocs represent a very winnable game and a damn-near surefire opportunity to get off the schneid... right?
Tennessee’s defense will simply have to do better than they have the last two weeks. Their mark of 33.5 points allowed per game ranks 112th in the nation out of the 130 FBS teams. Seeing as they’ve only scored 56 points through the team’s first two games, ranking 74th in the nation in that category, their defensive gaffes are all the more glaring.
Offensively, they will have to get it going a bit more. Ty Chandler leads the team in rushing with 202 yards and a yards per carry of 6.3. Those aren’t too terrible of numbers, but they certainly could use more out of him. The same goes for Jarrett Guarantano. Guarantano has thrown for 487 yards on 68 attempts, good for a Y/A of 7.2. Those numbers are rather pedestrian. He ranks 11th in the SEC in Y/A and in completion percentage as well. His 487 yards are good for fifth in the conference, but the fact that he ranks 3rd in attempts with 68 probably has a lot to do with that high passing yards total.
All told, this game is enticing for... all the wrong reasons. This should be a laugher, but Tennessee hasn’t exactly given anyone the BOTD here. The Vols will absolutely need this one, lest they instantly become an even bigger laughing stock than they are right now.
