The Texas A&M Aggies kick off their 2019 season on Thursday night. The Aggies will welcome the Texas State Bobcats to College Station in an intrastate matchup that figures to be very fun for one side, at least.
Thursday’s game between the Aggies and Bobcats brings about the start of the second year of Jimbo Fisher’s tenure in Aggieland. A&M went 9-4 with a Gator Bowl win over the N.C. State Wolfpack. After a lengthy offseason that saw some departures and an influx of top-tier talent, we shall see how things will start off for Jimbo and the Aggies in 2019.
A&M is 8-2 in their last 10 season openers. The only losses they took were to the UCLA Bruins in 2017 and the Florida Gators in 2012.
The opposing Bobcats will have someone very familiar to Ags fans everywhere patrolling their sidelines. Former offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Jake Spavital is the new head coach for Texas State. Spavital spent the last two seasons with the West Virginia Mountaineers, helping to guide Will Grier along as Dana Holgorsen’s OC and QB coach.
That coaching change was made for a reason though. The Bobcats are on the heels of a 3-9 campaign in 2018. They went 1-7 in Sun Belt play, finished 122nd out of 130 FBS teams in points per game (19.8) and scored just 21 points in their final three games of the year. They are hoping for better successes this year, but it will be an uphill battle.
