So begins another day of softball!
Leading the charge will be LSU and Ole Miss as they stand as the only two ranked teams from the conference in action on Tuesday. The Rebels may have their hands full as they go on the road to take on UT Martin at Bettye Giles Field up north. The Skyhawks actually have a better record to this point than the Rebels do, standing at 31-13, a game better than Ole Miss’ 30-13 mark. Granted, the Ohio Valley isn’t trotting out the talent that the Rebs have to deal with in the SEC, but as the adage goes, “You are what you record says you are,” and the Skyhawks have looked awfully good this year.
This isn’t the first time the two teams have met this season, as they squared off back in March, with Ole Miss proving victorious in that one. They’ve won four in a row going into this matchup on Tuesday and will have some carryover as they head into this intriguing road showdown.
LSU’s test should prove to be a bit easier as Northwestern State is 18-25-1 on the year with an 8-10 mark in their conference. LSU has historically romped them, winning all 26 of their previous matchups. The hot-hitting Bailey Landry, who leads the team in average, hits, doubles and stolen bases will be one to watch in this one of course as she looks to get out of a slump she went through over the weekend. Landry hit just 1-for-10 in the series against Ole Miss, which perhaps was a big factor in the Bayou Bengals being swept by the Rebels.
In other action, Mississippi State takes on lowly Alcorn State, who checks in with a record of just 15-24. It’s the last nonconference encounter of the season for the Bulldogs, who’ve won all their previous meetings against Alcorn State (5-0). State is rolling on the heels of a series win over Georgia and could keep their winning ways going. After losing their first two games of the month of April, Mississippi State has won five of the last seven with two series victories against aforementioned UGA and South Carolina.
Finally, those Gamecocks and the Missouri Tigers will be hosting doubleheaders on Tuesday. South Carolina will face off with Charleston Southern while Mizzou battles with SEMO.
