Bragging rights in The Palmetto State are up for grabs on Saturday, as the South Carolina Gamecocks face off with the Clemson Tigers.
As you might expect, the unbeaten Tigers are heavy favorites over the Gamecocks. Westgate has the preeminent ACC squad as 27-point favorites over their in-state adversaries. Considering Clemson is a robust 8-3 ATS this year and that the Tigers have overwhelmed virtually everyone they’ve faced... this is probably about right.
Defense wasn’t really the problem for South Carolina up until their shellacking last week at the hands of the Texas A&M Aggies. The Ags torched the Gamecocks for 540 total yards and 6.8 yards per play. They picked up a ridiculous 319 yards on the ground, the most South Carolina gave up since the 238 yards they gave up in first week of the season against the North Carolina Tar Heels. Before that, they were hanging in there, but a performance like that certainly left a bad taste in everyone’s mouths.
The offense is hoping to rebound also, but it will be tough sledding against the Tigers. They amassed just 215 yards through the air last week and a mere 45 yards rushing on 17 carries. Clemson has given up over 200 passing yards just once this year against aforementioned Texas A&M back in Week 2. The most they’ve allowed since then was just 150 vs. the Florida State Seminoles. They’ve also allowed 4.0 yards per carry just once in the last four weeks, having done so to the N.C. State Wolfpack two weeks ago. Other than that? 2.2, 3.1 and 1.7.
It is probably wishful thinking to expect South Carolina to win this game. Will they keep it to within the spread? That... will probably be more fascinating to watch.
