It was closer than it probably had any business being. But, the South Carolina Gamecocks were victorious on Saturday afternoon.
The Gamecocks defeated the Vanderbilt Commodores 21-20, surviving what would’ve been an embarrassing defeat. A touchdown pass to Xavier Legette from Zeb Noland with 37 seconds left propelled the Cocks over the ‘Dores, this after Vandy held an edge for quite some time in the second half.
South Carolina certainly fell asleep in this one. They let up 17 unanswered points to the Commodores which included two touchdowns from Rocko Griffin and Will Sheppard. Griffin powered into the end zone on a one-yard score while Sheppard reeled in a 52-yard reception from Mike Wright.
Granted, it really depends on your perspective in how you view this. Vandy showed encouraging signs but completely blew it at the end. South Carolina came away victorious but they still were trailing the worst SEC team for quite a while.
This one feels like a game that South Carolina will be happy to have in the end, but more should be expected from them.
