Oxford, Mississippi will play host to two teams desperately looking for a jolt.
The Ole Miss Rebels and South Carolina Gamecocks are in need of victories. Both stand at 2-4 in this abbreviated 2020 season and, in the case of the Rebels, are one unfortunate misstep away from the cellar in their division. The Gamecocks would have to do lots to enter the SEC East’s basement, but there aren’t too many rungs separating them from being lower on the ladder either.
One team does have a pretty distinct advantage over the other, though. Ole Miss’ offense has been far more proficient and productive than South Carolina’s by a longshot. The Rebels have the second-most points scored in the SEC this year behind the Alabama Crimson Tide. The Gamecocks, meanwhile, haven’t produced all that much, and stand nearly 80 points behind the Rebels in that category. So it’s safe to say that if Ole Miss can get their offense going and be in rhythm, they could make quick work of South Carolina on Saturday night.
Lately the Gamecocks have been absolutely gashed defensively. Especially so on the ground, as they’ve given up over 200 yards in their last three games. This includes 276 to the LSU Tigers and 264 last week to the Texas A&M Aggies. That’s probably really troubling news for South Carolina, as they face a Rebels rushing attack that has gone for over 100 yards on the ground in all six of their games this year, and over 200 yards three times. They just nearly missed 200 yards the last time they played against the Vanderbilt Commodores, as they picked up 196 that day. South Carolina is going to need to shore up against the run, or it could yet again be a very long night.
