Some good, clean old-fashioned hate will be brought out on Saturday in Atlanta. The Georgia Bulldogs and Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets’ annual meeting is set to start the day in a Saturday littered with rivalry games.
This game likely won’t be super competitive though. The Dawgs are 28.5-point favorites at the moment over the Yellow Jackets, one of the bigger lines this rivalry week. Seeing as the total is around 46/46.5, the implied score does not give credence to the belief that the Yellow Jackets will be able to hang with UGA. Stranger things have happened, but it’s probably likely that the Dawgs will roll here.
What will be intriguing though is to see how Georgia plays without Lawrence Cager. Cager suffered an ankle injury in practice this past week and is out for a couple weeks, as he’ll be missing this game and next week’s SEC Championship Game against the LSU Tigers at minimum. Without Cager around, Matt Landers, Demetris Robertson and Tyler Simmons should be able to step up, and we’ll see if any of the freshmen like Dominick Blaylock, for instance, can step up as well.
Georgia’s defense is climbing the ladder towards being in the elite of the elite. They are tied for second in scoring defense right now with the Clemson Tigers, and are just 0.2 points off the Ohio State Buckeyes, who lead the nation in that category. Their run defense is among the best in the nation in both yards allowed and YPC allowed, and their pass defense ain’t shabby either. They are fifth in YPP allowed, so this is just a damn good defense in just about every phase. Georgia Tech’s rankings in offense do not suggest that they’re going to really be able to hang, but the run-heavy Yellow Jackets will certainly be grinding it out, no doubt about it.
