Vanderbilt picked up their first win since 2019 last week. The Commodores defeated the Colorado State Rams thanks in large part to a late-game field goal. Now the ‘Dores will be facing a team who’s hoping to build off a win last week as well. The Stanford Cardinal defeated the USC Trojans a week ago at the LA Coliseum. The win was so demoralizing for USC that the Trojans decided to let Clay Helton go. The Cardinal have looked like two completely different teams in the first two weeks of the season. Which team will Vandy see on Saturday night?

Stanford is an incredibly tough team to read. One week, they can’t get anything going against Kansas State. The next, they’re drubbing USC in their home dojo. Given USC’s obvious listlessness and the aftermath of that game, did the Cardinal play a Trojan team that quit on their coach? It’s perhaps too early to tell that, but it may well have been a factor at play.

Nevertheless, Stanford is a more talented team than Vanderbilt. The Commodores have been pretty dreadful, as evident by their previously lengthy losing streak. The win over Colorado State was hard-earned and gives coach Clark Lea some confidence for himself and his team. Their defense has been a sieve, however. They rank in the bottom quadrant in rushing defense and seeing as they’re going against a physical Cardinal club, that could prove very costly.

Stanford as a two-touchdown favorite on the road is interesting. But, in the end, I think they will come away with a victory here.
