The Auburn Tigers roared to a season opening victory Saturday night, knocking off the Akron Zips by a 60-10 margin.
Bo Nix got his season off to a blistering start, completing his first 11 passes and going 20-22 overall on the evening with 275 yards and three touchdowns. 2020 SEC Freshman of the year Tank Bigsby had 119 rushing yards on 13 attempts and two touchdowns, as he looks to be picking up right where he left off last season. Both Nix and Bigsby played just over one half of the game, exiting after Auburn took a 44-0 lead on their first drive of the third quarter. Perhaps most impressively of Nix’s three touchdown passes were the fact that they were to three different players, as Ja’Varrius Johnson, Kobe Hudson, and Shaun Shivers all got in on the action.
TD Moultry stood out defensively for Auburn, recording three of the Tigers’ eight tackles for loss in the game. The Auburn defense forced a punt or three and out on eight of Akron’s 10 drives in the game.
Akron quarterbacks Kato Nelson and DJ Irons combined to go 20-25 for 181 yards and a touchdown.
Auburn will most likely have a similar game next week, as the Tigers play host to Alabama State, a team Auburn beat by 54 in their last meeting (2018).
