SEC Power Poll, Week 14: Upended

Some of the teams have changed their lot in our poll significantly since the preseason -- for better or for worse

Michael Chang

SEC POWER POLL RESULTS FOR WEEK 14

1. Alabama Crimson Tide, 126 points (9 first-place votes)
2. Auburn Tigers, 113
3. Missouri Tigers, 110
4. LSU Tigers, 96
5. South Carolina Gamecocks, 95
6. Texas A&M Aggies, 81
7. Mississippi Rebels, 66
8. Georgia Bulldogs, 63
9. Vanderbilt Commodores, 60
10. Mississippi St. Bulldogs, 41
11. Tennessee Volunteers, 36
12. Florida Gators, 30
13. Arkansas Razorbacks 19
14. Kentucky Wildcats, 9

Sometimes, to really appreciate how much the poll has changed, it's useful to look at the first edition of the season. And my, how those results of changed. After the first games were played, Florida was ranked 6th. Arkansas was ranked 9th -- ahead of Auburn and Missouri. Where were the Tigers? The variety from Alabama started out at No. 10. The variety from the Show-Me State were slotted at No. 12. As you can tell, they are now Nos. 2 and 3, respectively.

There were a few teams that our pollsters got "right," for lack of a better term and according to this week's results. Ole Miss started the year at No. 7, where it again finds itself after some ups and downs. Tennessee clocked in at 11th then, and Kentucky ended up in last place. As it does now.

Unanimously, one of three teams that got broad consensus this week. The others were Alabama (natch) and Texas A&M, which is pretty firmly locked in as the No. 6 team in the conference. Elsewhere, LSU and A&M switch places this week after the Bayou Bengals' win, Florida drops two places after the loss to Georgia Southern and Mississippi gets a bit of separation from Tennessee.

Voters?

ALABAMA

Saban blew a gasket that his team did not kneel down to run out the clock properly. They have one more regular season game to work on it.--And the Valley Shook

At this point the rest of the league couldn't catch up to Saban if he spotted them the p,r,o,c,e, and first s.--Dawg Sports

ARKANSAS

Bret Bielema's door prize for losing his seventh conference game in a row is a trip to lovely Baton Rouge to close out the season.--Get the Picture

Just making it to OT against an SEC team is a moral victory, and the Hogs can use any victory they can get.--And the Valley Shook

AUBURN

The Tigers have Alabama right where they want them.--Get the Picture

As a football fan, I'd like to see a really competitive Iron Bowl, but my default assumption is still carnage.--Rocky Top Talk

FLORIDA

First losing season since 1979? I know there is a tendency to think of the Gators as "new money", but that is a streak that extends the lifetime of about three-quarters of our readership. That's truly impressive.--And the Valley Shook

One explanation is that this team has simply quit on Will Muschamp. That's bad. The other explanation is that they haven't, and this is the best they can do. That's even worse.--Dawg Sports

GEORGIA

Really about all that's left is a team-wide outbreak of ebola.--Dawg Sports

Aaron Murray shouldn't have been playing with UGA up 30+ in the third quarter. Regardless, he deserves better than to leave Sanford Stadium on his Senior Night in an ambulance.--Arkansas Fight

KENTUCKY

The 'Cats gave up more points to a beat up Georgia squad than any other team they've played this season.  Yeah, it's not getting better.--Get the Picture

At least there's that undefeated basketball team...--And the Valley Shook

LSU

A huge win transforms this season from potential disaster to a mere disappointment.--And the Valley Shook

The Bayou Bengals notched their most impressive win of the season, derailing Johnny Manziel's Heisman campaign and raising hopes for 2014.--Dawg Sports

MISSISSIPPI

A solid team, but even with a win over LSU, they aren't in the conference's top five. Missouri showed that.--Rocky Top Talk

One of the best four-loss teams in the country, which is the very definition of faint praise.--And the Valley Shook

MISSISSIPPI STATE

One Egg Bowl upset away from saving Mullen's job and enjoying the prospect of even more 6-6 seasons.--And the Valley Shook

Dan Mullen really, really needs this Egg Bowl. Ergo you should take Ole Miss and give the points.--Dawg Sports

MISSOURI

This is one tough football team.  And that season-ender doesn't look quite as daunting now.--Get the Picture

The Tigers, considering the circumstances, played about as well of a game as they have all season in Oxford. Back in the AP top five, a win over fellow newcomer Texas A&M will assure the Tigers a trip to Atlanta.--Arkansas Fight

SOUTH CAROLINA

I don't know what I'm enjoying more, Spurrier hypocritically rooting for a cross-divisional loss, or the prospect of the 'Cocks beating the East representative in the SECCG for the third straight year with nothing to show for it.--Get the Picture

Contending for the SEC title by not playing Texas A&M.--And the Valley Shook

TENNESSEE

May be time to ditch those gray uniforms, fellas.--Get the Picture

Butch Jones has fallen short of one of the three primary reasonable goals for this year. He still looks on track for the other two. Don't ask me how Vols fans should take that.--Rocky Top Talk

TEXAS A&M

Looking into the prospect of not playing LSU anymore.--And the Valley Shook

I didn't even know it was possible to limit a Kevin Sumlin offense to 10 points. I totally knew that it was possible for Texas A&M to give up 517 yards of offense, including 324 on the ground. When the two collide, the result is an Aggie loss.--Dawg Sports

VANDERBILT

4-4 in conference play, despite being outgained by 75 yards per game.  Some luck, but some good coaching, too.--Get the Picture

Those kids from Vandy are pretty clever as they defeat Tennessee in consecutive games for the first time since 1926. They also beat Georgia and Florida this season, proving the Mayan's prediction was a year off.--Arkansas Fight
