James Franklin Calls Alabama Coach "Nicky Satan"

The Commodores head coach is anything but boring, I'll give him that.

If you buy something from an SB Nation link, Vox Media may earn a commission. See our ethics statement.

James Franklin was the featured speaker at the fall sports banquet for the Macon, Georgia Central High School Chargers. He apparently did not realize (or just didn't care) that cameras would be there to record what he said on video. The money quote, if you can't see the video, is this:

"There's this guy at Alabama, I think his name is Nicky Satan, you guys have probably heard of him before. I'm going to outwork him. I'm going to outwork him, and that's kind of our plan every single day."

It's pretty clear on the video that this was no slip of the tongue. I also wonder if the "Nicky" part is in some way a reference to the Adam Sandler vehicle Little Nicky, a film in which the actor plays the son of the devil. Probably not, I'm guessing, but it's an on-message coincidence nonetheless.

As you probably can guess, Vanderbilt doesn't play Alabama this coming fall. It's extraordinarily rare for coaches to call other out by name like this if they actually will face off in the near future, after all.

UPDATE: Franklin called to apologize. Awwww.
