Against my better judgment, we'll go ahead and tell you that Derek Dooley is REPORTEDLY the next REPORTED head coach at Tennessee REPORTEDLY. (How many ESPN writers does it take to compose a one-sentence news update? Two, apparently.)
Dooley takes a job turned down by David Cutcliffe, Troy Calhoun, Kyle Whittingham, Will Muschamp and, in an embarrassing but ultimately harmless oversight, Timothy Geithner.
Dooley has done a solid job at Louisiana Tech and was likely in line for a promotion at some point. But he's gone from a mid-tier WAC program to a team that expects to compete for SEC championships every year. You have to wonder if he would have gotten that promotion if his name were Derek Smith.
It's not, of course, and it does matter that he's the son of one of the best coaches in SEC history. You have to learn something that way.
Tennessee is about to find out if it's enough.
