On January 2, 2002, the Florida Gators bulldozed the Maryland Terrapins 56-23 in the Orange Bowl. Rex Grossman and Taylor Jacobs especially were the stars that day for the Gators in what would be Steve Spurrier’s last game as the Gators’ head coach.
Things are just a little different now in 2019. But we’ll see the Gators back in Miami again. Technically, it’s not the first time in 17 years that they’ll play there, as they won the BCS National Championship Game over the Oklahoma Sooners following the 2008 regular season. But, this is their first ‘Orange Bowl’ appearance in 17 years, and it’s against the Virginia Cavaliers.
The Cavaliers didn’t uproot the Clemson Tigers in the ACC Championship Game, but they’ve certainly had a great season. This will be the first time that the Hoos have ever been in an Orange Bowl, which is a very nice accomplishment for them and their program. Win or lose, it’ll probably be pretty hard to be disappointed in UVA football, and, well, y’know, UVA athletics in general. They’re prospering right now, if you haven’t been paying attention.
