Seven teams from the SEC made the latest edition of the College Football Playoff Rankings. To no one’s surprise, the Alabama Crimson Tide are still the leaders of the pack. ‘Bama is #1 and would be projected to face the Michigan Wolverines “if the season ended today,” as the Wolverines joined the party at the #4 spot. The Clemson Tigers and Notre Dame Fighting Irish were #2 and #3 respectively, meanwhile.
Just outside the Top 4 are the #5 Georgia Bulldogs. The Dawgs, who won the SEC East on Saturday, sent the Kentucky Wildcats out of the Top 10 and to the #11 spot. Speaking of tumbles, the LSU Tigers fell from #3 down to #7. A quick reminder that no team who started #3 in the CFB Playoff Rankings has ever made the Playoff.
The three other SEC teams to make the rankings were the Florida Gators, Mississippi State Bulldogs and Auburn Tigers. Florida is ranked 15th, State ranked 16th and Auburn is 24th after this past weekend’s proceedings.
Obviously the team here with the biggest potential to join Alabama in the Top 4 is Georgia. The Dawgs have ‘Bama locked in for their meeting in December for the SEC Championship. That coupled with a game against the Auburn Tigers will give them a shot to garner a quality win and hope to slide into the Top 4. They will need some help though with Michigan and Notre Dame, as they’ll likely be rooting against them no matter who they face. Well... okay, they’ll concede the meeting with Rutgers, if nothing else.
