The Rundown for SEC Baseball: May 2

One game on the radar tonight, but it’s a big one.

NCAA Baseball: College World Series-Mississippi State vs Oregon State Steven Branscombe-USA TODAY Sports

One SEC team was extremely successful in their game on Wednesday. The other... not so much!

The Missouri Tigers dropped a season-high 21 runs on SEMO in an impressive showing. The 21-6 victory for the Tigers certainly gives them added conference as they head into this weekend’s series with the Tennessee Volunteers. 10 batters were responsible for the 21 runs plated, with Austin James bringing in five of them. Chris Cornelius smacked a homer in the blowout win, as did Alex Peterson.

Meanwhile, 15th-ranked Ole Miss suffered a 5-3 defeat at Pete Taylor Park in Hattiesburg. The Southern Miss Golden Eagles knocked the Rebels off after jostling back and forth throughout much of the game. But the Golden Eagles scored two runs in the late innings, one in the 7th to break a 3-3 tie, and an insurance run in the 8th to ensure the win. Matt Wallner hit his 13th and 14th homers of the year to help lead the Golden Eagles, now 30-13 on the year, to victory.

There’s but one game going on this evening. The Mississippi State Bulldogs and Texas A&M Aggies are set to do battle in a pivotal conference matchup.

The two teams aren’t separated by too much in the SEC West standings. However, if the Bulldogs win this series, they could certainly put A&M in a bind as they’d continue to hang around 5th and 6th place in the division.

The Aggies though could make up some ground and possibly position themselves up near 2nd, where State currently resides.

Jake Mangum will be one to watch, as the State slugger is second in batting average in the conference at .394. Of course, we should also be looking at Aggies star Braden Shewmake, who’s hitting a robust .323 on the year, too.

This game will take place at 7 p.m. ET/6 p.m. CT on SEC Network.
