The Rundown for SEC Baseball: February 20

A successful Tuesday gives way to perhaps an eventful Wednesday.

The SEC flexed their muscles for the most part on Tuesday, but a surprising result stood out amongst the pack.

That aforementioned result came in Tampa. The Florida Gators were shellshocked by the South Florida Bulls, losing 6-1. South Florida was able to get right on the board, tagging Hunter McMullen for two runs, which were followed up by a solo shot in the third by Joe Genord to extend the lead up to 3-0. The Gators were able to get on the board thanks to the bat of Jud Fabian, who launched a solo blast off Richie Cruz, but that would be all that USF would surrender all night. Chris Chatfield slugged a solo shot an inning later, and Kyle Phillips broke it open with a two-run double a few batters later.

Apart from that loss, however, the rest of the conference got into the win column. LSU eked out a win over SE Louisiana, triumphing 6-5 with two runs scored over the course of the seventh and eighth innings. The runs came off Antoine Duplantis reaching base in the 7th, which led to Josh Smith scoring. In the ensuing frame, Brock Mathis smacked a single to left that plated Giovanni DiGiacom and allowed for LSU to take the lead and never relinquish it.

Other notables included Tennessee blowing Northern Kentucky out 18-0. The Vols scored 12 runs in the 8th inning en route to victory. Luc Lipcius went 3-4 with a triple and a home run, falling a double shy of the cycle. He also had five (5) RBI on the night. Ricky Martinez was responsible for four RBI and a double, as well. Carson Skipper fanned eight batters over four innings in Auburn’s 10-1 win over Alabama A&M, meanwhile, and posted no earned runs and just two hits over those four innings. Finally, Ty Coleman went lift off for the first time this season in Texas A&M’s 5-3 win over Stephen F. Austin.
