The 2019 Ole Miss Rebels football season gets underway on Saturday. The Rebels will travel up the road to the Liberty Bowl in Memphis, Tennessee to take on the Memphis Tigers. Coach Matt Luke’s team comes in as an underdog in what could turn out to be a season defining game.
While Luke is entering his third season at the helm of the Ole Miss program, this year marks somewhat of a new era for his team. After an extremely disappointing 5-7 record last year, Luke fired defensive coordinator Wes McGriff while offensive coordinator Phil Longo avoided the same fate by jumping to the same job at North Carolina. Luke replaced them with men who have a lot of high level experience not only as coordinators, but as head coaches, in Mike MacIntyre and Rich Rodriguez.
While Luke hopes the 3rd year is the charm in terms of achieving a winning record, on the opposing sideline will be a team hoping that phrase applies to winning their conference championship game. Led by Mike Norvell, the Tigers have high hopes of reaching the American title game for the third year in a row, but with different results this time, as their past 2 trips ended in shootout losses to the UCF Knights in Orlando. Last years loss, coupled with a loss to the Wake Forest Demon Deacons in the Birmingham Bowl, left the Tigers at 8-6 on the season.
Ole Miss has won two of the last three meetings between the teams but the last time the game was played in Memphis, the Tigers upset a 13th-ranked Rebels team, 37-24.
