October is over, so that means the college football season is about to really begin. Week 9 was the calm before the storm in many ways, with a number of teams on bye, most notably LSU and Alabama before their big game in Baton Rouge this weekend.
As always, there were a number of great individual performances despite those teams getting the week off. You are likely familiar with the format by now, but just in case, make sure you read through the premise of this column here if you're unfamiliar.
Now, let's get to it. Here's our All-SEC team for week 9, followed up an updated year-to-date All-SEC team:
Quarterback
Name | Team | Comp. | Att. | Yds. | Comp% | TD | INT | Yds./Att. | Rush | Rush Yds. | Yds./ Rush | Rush TD | Total Yds. | Total TD
1st Team | Chad Kelly | Ole Miss | 36 | 59 | 465 | 61.0% | 3 | 1 | 7.9 | 9 | 55 | 6.1 | 0 | 520 | 3 |
2nd Team | Nick Fitzgerald | Mississippi State | 20 | 35 | 417 | 57.1% | 5 | 2 | 11.9 | 18 | 121 | 6.72 | 2 | 538 | 7 |
Believe it or not, this is only the second time Kelly has made this list, though it comes in another Ole Miss lost. Certainly not the way he or the folks in Oxford saw this season playing out.
Running Back
Name | Team | Att. | Yds. | Yds. / Att. | TD | Tgt. | Catch | Rec. Yds. | Rec. TD | Yds./ Catch | Yds./ Tgt. | Total Yds. | Total TD | Yds./ Touch
1st Team | Kamryn Pettway | Auburn | 30 | 236 | 7.9 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 236 | 1 | 7.9 |
2nd Team | Boom Williams | Kentucky | 19 | 182 | 9.6 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 13 | 1 | 13.0 | 13.0 | 195 | 2 | 9.8 |
Pettway makes the All-SEC team for the second straight week by running all over Ole Miss.
It was a tough choice between Williams and fellow Wildcat Benny Snell, Jr., as both gashed Missouri on the ground, but I ultimately went with Boom because he was a bit more explosive.
Wide Receiver
Name | Team | Tgt. | Catch | Catch% | Yds. | TD | Yds./ Catch | Yds./ Tgt. | Rush Att. | Rush Yds. | Yds./ Att. | Rush TD | Yds./ Scrim. | TD/ Scrim. | Yds./ Touch
1st Team | Donald Gray | Mississippi State | 5 | 4 | 80.0% | 207 | 3 | 51.8 | 41.4 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 207 | 3 | 51.8 |
Jeff Badet | Kentucky | 5 | 3 | 60.0% | 104 | 1 | 34.7 | 20.8 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 104 | 1 | 34.7
2nd Team | Dimetrios Mason | Missouri | 6 | 4 | 66.7% | 101 | 2 | 25.3 | 16.8 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 101 | 2 | 25.3 |
Deebo Samuel | South Carolina | 9 | 8 | 88.9% | 83 | 0 | 10.4 | 9.2 | 1 | 6 | 6.0 | 0 | 89 | 0 | 9.9 |
Yes, it came against Samford, but 207 yards and three touchdowns on just four catches for Donald Gray is awfully impressive.
Tight End
Name | Team | Tgt. | Catch | Catch% | Yds. | TD | Yds. / Catch | Yds. / Tgt.
First Team | Evan Engram | Ole Miss | 15 | 9 | 60.0% | 95 | 1 | 10.6 | 6.3 |
Second Team | Sean Culkin | Missouri | 9 | 6 | 66.7% | 53 | 0 | 8.8 | 5.9 |
Another big performance from Engram, who was the only tight end to really stand out in the SEC in Week 9.
Defensive Line
Name | Team | Tackles | TFL | Sack | PD | INT | FF | TD | Havoc
First Team | Derek Barnett | Tennessee | 4 | 3 | 3 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 3 |
Kendal Vickers | Tennessee | 6.5 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 1
Marquis Haynes | Ole Miss | 5 | 1 | 0 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 2
Corey Vereen | Tennessee | 5 | 2 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 2
Second Team | Jabari Zuniga | Florida | 2.5 | 2 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 2 |
Montravius Adams | Auburn | 3.5 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 1
Kingsley Keke | Texas A&M | 2.5 | 2 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 2
Marlon Davidson | Auburn | 4 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 1 |
After a loss to South Carolina, Tennessee's season looks to be off the rails. But you can't place the blame on their defensive line. Barnett, in particular, continues to make a case for defensive player of the year.
Linebacker
Name | Team | Tackles | TFL | Sack | PD | INT | FF | TD | Havoc
First Team | DeMarquis Gates | Ole Miss | 8 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 0 | 2 |
Jordan Jones | Kentucky | 4 | 2 | 0 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 3
Jarrad Davis | Florida | 4.5 | 2.5 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 2.5
Second Team | Claude George | Texas A&M | 3.5 | 2 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 0 | 3 |
Eric Beisel | Missouri | 5 | 3 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 3
DeAndre Ward | Mississippi State | 4 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 1 | 1 |
A solid, if not spectacular, week from SEC linebackers.
Cornerback
Name | Team | Tackles | TFL | Sack | PD | INT | FF | TD | Havoc
First Team | Jamarcus King | South Carolina | 5 | 0 | 0 | 4 | 2 | 0 | 0 | 4 |
Joshua Holsey | Auburn | 1 | 0 | 0 | 5 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 5
Second Team | Deandre Baker | Georgia | 7.5 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 2 |
Duke Dawson | Florida | 1.5 | 0 | 0 | 2 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 2 |
If you're a Tennessee fan looking to single out someone from the other team as responsible for your third straight loss, look no further than Jamarcus King.
Safety
Name | Team | Tackles | TFL | Sack | PD | INT | FF | TD | Havoc
First Team | Cam Hilton | Missouri | 9.5 | 1 | 0 | 2 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 3 |
Dominick Sanders | Georgia | 2 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 1
Second Team | Tray Matthews | Auburn | 8.5 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
Todd Kelly, Jr. | Tennessee | 5 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 1 |
Hilton was really only able to have such a big game because of Missouri's porous front seven, but he made a couple of nice plays in the passing game as well. Not a great week for SEC safeties overall.
Kicker
Name | Team | Made FG | Att. FG | Long | Made XP | Att. XP | Total Pts.
First Team | Daniel Carlson | Auburn | 4 | 4 | 47 | 4 | 4 | 16 |
Second Team | Gary Wunderlich | Ole Miss | 3 | 3 | 49 | 2 | 3 | 11 |
A couple of big time kicking performances in the Auburn - Ole Miss game.
Punter
Name | Team | Punt Att. | Yds. | Yds. / Att. | Long
First Team | Trevor Daniel | Tennessee | 6 | 294 | 49.0 | 70 |
Second Team | Johnny Townsend | Florida | 6 | 287 | 47.8 | 55 |
These have been the two best punters in the SEC all season long.
