It's been a fascinating regular season for the SEC this year, but the national title streak remains alive and there are some good match-ups to try to prove once again which conference is the best in college football. The postseason begins now.

I got some things right and I got some things wrong. Here are each

It's easy to throw bowl projections out there -- a lot of people do -- but more difficult to take your lumps when you get some of the selections wrong. I'll do that now, and Iowa fans are perfectly within their rights to laugh at me. This is based on the last edition of the bowl projections, and it's fair to point out that they went through a lot of evolution over the last several weeks.

BCS Bowls

BCS National Championship Game: Florida St. Seminoles vs.Auburn Tigers -- CHECK
Sugar Bowl: Alabama Crimson Tide vs. Oklahoma Sooners -- CHECK
Rose Bowl: Stanford Cardinal vs. Michigan St. Spartans -- CHECK
Fiesta Bowl: Baylor Bears vs. Central Florida Knights -- CHECK
Orange Bowl: Ohio St. Buckeyes vs. Clemson Tigers -- CHECK

This was really the easiest part of the exercise last night. No one really doubted that Auburn was going to go to the national championship game, three of teams were contractually obligated to their bowls and Alabama was virtually a lock for the Sugar Bowl. Ohio State and Clemson were also pretty certain of their Orange Bowl placement, and it didn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that UCF would go to the bowl with the last at-large pick. The only one that was even slightly iffy was Oklahoma. Still, it's nice to get them all right.

Non-BCS SEC Bowls

Capital One Bowl: South Carolina Gamecocks vs. Wisconsin Badgers -- CHECK
Outback Bowl: LSU Tigers vs. <strike>Nebraska Cornhuskers</strike> Iowa Hawkeyes
Cotton Bowl: Missouri Tigers vs. Oklahoma St. Cowboys -- CHECK
Chick-fil-A Bowl: Texas A&M Aggies vs. <strike>Miami Hurricanes</strike> Duke Blue Devils
Gator Bowl: Georgia Bulldogs vs. <strike>Michigan Wolverines</strike> Nebraska Cornhuskers
Music City Bowl: Mississippi Rebels vs. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets -- CHECK
Liberty Bowl: Mississippi St. Bulldogs vs. Rice Owls -- CHECK
BBVA Compass Bowl: Vanderbilt Commodores vs. Houston Cougars -- CHECK

I took a chance on the Outback Bowl being insane and it disappointed me. That's actually a pretty logical match-up for the guys from Tampa. Good on them. I also missed on Duke, though there were all sorts of rumors that John Swofford was personally involved in getting the Blue Devils into the Chick-fil-A Bowl. (The ACC denies that it is involved in any such lobbying. Wink wink.)

As for Nebraska going to the Gator Bowl instead of Michigan? You got me. Well, you had me, but one of SB Nation's Kansas State bloggers explains why the Wildcats going to the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl meant Nebraska wouldn't.

I did get all the SEC teams right, which is our focus here, so I'll take it. But it goes to show something that I've said on Twitter and here a few times: None of us know entirely what we're talking about. Bowls make selections based on their own agendas and business interests and, every so often, the quality of the teams. Projecting bowls is fun, at least for me, because it's interesting trying to figure out how all those factors play out. It's been a blast, and hopefully it will be even more of a blast after the playoff takes over next year.

The Tigers will take a trip back in time a couple of years to face their old Big 12 opponents in the Cotton Bowl

For a night, at least, it will almost be like Missouri never left the Big 12. After the season that definitively proved that the other other Tigers belong in the SEC, they're going to the Cotton Bowl to face a former conference-mate in Oklahoma State.

This is sort of a coincidental meeting between two teams that lost their conference championships in their final game. Missouri, of course, lost the SEC Championship Game to Auburn, while the Cowboys lost a must-win game to Oklahoma and allowed Baylor to take the Big 12 title with the Bears' win against Texas. (The Longhorns would have won it otherwise.)

Both are also pretty explosive. The Cowboys average 39.8 points a game, while Missouri averages 39.0 points a game. It would be a surprise if the over-under on this game isn't in the 70s.

The Bulldogs and the Owls square off in Memphis after both of them needed a last-game victory to get there

Mississippi State almost didn't make a bowl this year, needing a hair-raising win against Ole Miss in the final game of the season to become eligible for the postseason. But they got there, and now they will play the Rice Owls in the Liberty Bowl. Rice also got in on its last game, when it beat the Marshall Thundering Herd to win Conference USA.

The Owls' 16th-ranked rushing offense could test Mississippi State's 46th-ranked rushing defense. But it's hard to take too much away from the Owls' performance up to this point. No, the Western Division Bulldogs aren't the best team in the SEC by any stretch of the imagination, but the CUSA is not exactly on the same level as the SEC. And you really don't have to be a chest-thumping ESS EEE SEE fan to know that. On the other hand, Rice's defense is better at stopping the pass than the run, which means that it's not exactly geared to stop Mississippi State at what the Bulldogs do best.

If it's New Year's Day and Georgia is in Florida for its bowl game, it must mean that the Nebraska Corhuskers are the opponent

Georgia really can't have much of a complaint with its place in the SEC bowl order. After all, the Dawgs had an 8-4 record that is equaled or bettered by every SEC team in the field, and so the Gator Bowl isn't a terrible draw. The problem is the opponent.

"Nebraska again? You kidding me?" [Michael] Bennett posted on his Twitter page.

Yes, Georgia is going to play Nebraska. Again. One of the hazards of the SEC having no fewer than three bowls against the B1G every year. Some of that will change with the new playoff, but some of it still will not. The SEC needs a game against the Pac-12 every year and could use another Big 12 game or two. Why the B1G should have a lock on more than quarter of the SEC's bowl games is a mystery to me, but they do.

So Georgia will play Nebraska for a second straight year, this time in the Gator Bowl, which will be broadcast Jan. 1 at noon ET on ESPN2.

The Commodores might have had a historic year, but they're still going to Birmingham to play the Cougars of the American Athletics Conference

The BBVA Compass Bowl is tied for the last SEC bowl to select this year. That's an important thing to keep in mind as we lay out the following report.

Part of that is a function of all but two of the SEC's bowl-eligible teams at least equaling the 8-4 record that the Commodores have, part of that is a function of the Music City Bowl not wanting Vanderbilt, and part of it is a function of the Liberty Bowl trying to dodge a repeat SEC participant. Still, it's hard for Vanderbilt fans to swallow getting bumped down to the lowest rung of the bowl ladder after the year that they had.

Houston, as you might expect, has a prolific passing attack matched with a lackluster rushing offense and a pocketful of rabbit's feet. The Cougars lead the nation in turnover margin, averaging an edge of 2.1 turnovers a game. How lucky is that? The team with the next-highest turnover margin is up by an average of 1.3 a game. However, 23 of the turnovers were interceptions, which are less lucky than fumble recoveries (at least in my opinion).

The objective for Ole Miss in this game really shouldn't be that hard to figure out: Stop the option running attack.
A weird pairing of teams heads to Atlanta for the Chick-fil-A Bowl, which should still be known as the Peach Bowl if you ask me

The Chick-fil-A Bowl will feature two teams that no one expected to see there at the beginning of the season, for very different reasons. For one, no one expected Johnny Manziel and Texas A&M to fall far enough for the Atlanta-based event to pick them up, and few expected Duke to do well enough to get to the ACC's first bowl spot outside of the BCS.

Yep, it's Blue Devils vs. Aggies for all the spicy chicken sandwiches and plush cows. Really, what's not to like?

I'm not quite sure what to make of this game right now. Duke is a better team than a lot of people give them credit for being, even though they did get four of their 10 wins by a single score and were pretty thoroughly annihilated by Florida State in the second half of the ACC Championship Game. But this is one of the best seasons for Duke football in a long time -- maybe ever -- and it's likely Manziel's last college football game, so it could be interesting.
