This week’s SEC Player of the Week honors were announced on Monday.
The Kentucky Wildcats boasted the Player of the Week, as Troy Squires took home the honor. Squires was fantastic in Kentucky’s week of play, helping to lead them to a series win over 3rd-ranked Texas Tech. Squires hit well over .500 in his five games of work and slugged two homers, as well. He was richly deserving of the honor, as he performed big in a big spot.
Meanwhile, Casey Mize is your SEC Pitcher of the Week. The Auburn hurler was unhittable — literally — in his outing against Northeastern. Mize threw a no-hitter, highlighted by 13 strikeouts. He had no walks, either, so it was an extremely phenomenal outing. Some of Mizzou’s pitchers likely came close with their efforts this weekend, but Mize truly shined.
Then there was the Freshman of the Week. Jayson Gonzalez of the Vanderbilt Commodores shined brightest among the crop of youngsters. He hit over .360 last week and had an OBP over .450. He hit a home run and helped lead Vandy to wins over UCLA and TCU, both of whom were ranked in the Top 25.
