Two of this week’s SEC Players of the Week both just so happen to be Phillips’. There’s no relation, though.
Ole Miss Rebels running back Scottie Phillips and LSU Tigers linebacker Jacob Phillips picked up the honors after outstanding performances this weekend. Each player helped lift their teams to wins, oddly enough both of which came in the state of Texas.
Scottie used a dynamic rushing performance to help the Rebels defeat the Texas Tech Red Raiders in Houston. The Ole Miss tailback ran for over 200 yards in Ole Miss’ 47-27 victory. He became the first Rebel running back to go over 200 yards since Brandon Bolden did it several weeks back. If this is the start of something big for him, then defenses had best watch out. Because he looked tremendous on Saturday.
Jacob, meanwhile, helped lead the LSU defense to a dominant performance over the Miami (FL) Hurricanes. He amassed seven tackles and had a pick six off the arm of Malik Rosier, all of this coming in his first career start at linebacker. That’s quite the way to start things off.
Meanwhile, Auburn Tigers linebacker Darrell Williams had a huge game that helped him pick up co-Defensive Player of the Week honors. Williams was an anchor for the Tigers in a performance that helped them defeat the Washington Huskies down in Atlanta. He had eight tackles, one TFL and a fumble recovery in the game. The eight tackles were a career-best mark for him and also led the way for Auburn on Saturday afternoon.
