IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida is the Power Five’s farm league for all intents and purposes and it just placed another of its brood at a premiere institution.
Strongside defensive end Stephon Wynn, who’s actually from Anderson, SC, announced today in his hometown that he was committing to the Alabama Crimson Tide over the in-state South Carolina Gamecocks and the Georgia Bulldogs at a time where the Tide are trying to beef up their numbers all the way into July.
This is an outlier season of recruiting for ‘Bama thus far as they currently sit at #61 in the 247Sports team rankings. Their 2017 class consisted of 28 players signed and 25 in 2016, meaning that they’ll have to sign a lesser number in 2018 to have the mandated 85 scholarships next season.
For only having six players, though, the Tide’s class is quality over quantity and Wynn is no exception.
At 6’4” 285 lbs, Wynn is one of those power-plus-speed guys who could easily be a one or three-technique lineman on passing downs or a five-technique guy on running plays.
He’s essentially the size, currently, that Jonathan Allen was in his final season at Alabama. In Scott Cochran’s weight room, Wynn may end up being a nose tackle in the Tide’s base 3-4 scheme.
Either way, Wynn looks to have what it takes to be one of ‘Bama’s next great linemen and as Allen, A’Shawn Robinson, Jarran Reed and Dalvin Tomlinson are no longer in Tuscaloosa, he could see playing time pretty early.
Congrats to Wynn and his family!
