In game between a pair of 1-0 teams, No. 4 LSU fell to No. 1 Oregon State, 13-1 in the sixth game of the 2017 College World Series.
LSU lost starter Ethan Walker in the third inning with ‘forearm stiffness’ and fell apart from there. Caleb Gilbert came on to pitch in relief and gave up two unearned runs over 2.2 innings. Following that was four straight relief appearances in which the Fighting Tigers gave up at least one run.
The game was broken open in the top of the 6th inning when KJ Harrison blew the game open with a grand slam to extend the Beavers’ lead to 8-0. Oregon State added three more in the top of the 7th off of reliever Hunter Newman. Newman gave up five earned runs over two innings on the mound for LSU.
Between the 5th and the 7th inning, the Beavers compiled 10 runs on nine walks and four hits.
Bryce Fehmel was terrific on the mound for Oregon State, tossing eight innings of two-hit ball, allowing only one run the whole way. The win moves Fehmel to 6-2 on the season with a 3.53 ERA.
Zach Watson got the Tigers on the board in the bottom of the seventh inning with a solo home run to left field, his ninth on the season.
LSU will play an elimination game against Florida State on Wednesday, while Oregon State will wait for the winner of that game on Friday. All of these games can be caught on the ESPN series of networks.
