North Texas and Florida are already off and running on this fine Saturday.
Let’s take a trip back to Friday first though. Texas A&M won a crucial game over Tennessee 5-1. The win firmly puts the Aggies in second place in the SEC right now and sent the Vols tumbling down to 14-7. They’re now two back in the loss column of A&M and one back of Auburn as well. Given another result (that we’ll get to shortly), the lowest that the Vols can find themselves now going into the SEC Tournament is fourth place, so not all is necessarily bad. But, we’ll see if they can make a bigger dent in their second matchup with A&M on Saturday.
Speaking of Auburn, the Tigers won a marathon game against the Alabama Crimson Tide. The game lasted nine innings and Alexis Osorio, for some reason, threw well over 180 pitches and wound up not getting anything for it. Auburn rallied in the top of the ninth and after an error brought Kasey Cooper home, Kendall Veach hit a two-run double to put a three-spot up in the run column which would be all they needed to tally up the victory.
That aforementioned Alabama loss was quite significant. The Tide dropped to 11-10 in conference play, and now cannot get any higher than fifth in the conference. Given LSU and Kentucky’s records now after Friday’s play (we’ll get to that shortly), they could find themselves tumbling down to eighth if things continue to be messy against their in-state rivals.
The aforementioned Tigers and Wildcats BOTH lost on Friday to send them to 11-11 in league play. LSU dropped one to South Carolina by the score of 5-4 while Kentucky fell 6-2 on the road to Mississippi State. With State and Ole Miss, who grabbed a 6-0 win over Mizzou, now both at 9-13, both the Bayou Bengals and Wildcats must be careful. Otherwise, they could wind up tumbling even further from their spots and get less than ideal positions in the SEC Tournament.
In the only other games of the day, both Florida and Arkansas proved victorious. The Gators took down the Mean Green 8-0 (and are currently winning over North Texas right now) while the Hogs defeated the Bulldogs 6-2.
