Alston Orji (Rockwall, TX) committed to the Vanderbilt Commodores on Tuesday night, giving Derek Mason a talented addition to his class of 2018.

Orji’s Crystal Ball indicates that this decision comes as a bit of a surprise. The Oklahoma Sooners held a lead with the Texas Longhorns ahead of the Commodores as well. In the end though, it’s Mason and the ‘Dores who win out as Vandy has reeled in an extremely talented linebacker.
Orji plays inside and ranks seventh at his position in the class of 2018. That puts him in the company of Notre Dame Fighting Irish commit Matthew Bauer (Erie, PA), Arkansas Razorbacks commit Bumper Pool (Lucas, TX) as well as uncommitted four-star K’Vaughn Pope (Dinwiddie, VA). Orji is 21st among Texas recruits and in the Top 200 nationally (178th).
Vandy is now up to four 2018 commits with the addition of Alston Orji. He joins three three-star commits in Allan Walters (pro-style QB, Hightstown, NJ), Daniel Dawkins (OC, Hightstown, NJ) and Miles Jones (ATH, Fort Lauderdale, FL). They still remain 10th in the SEC so far in the 2018 rankings, but they do take a leap nationally. They’ll leapfrog from their spot at 59th to 50th, usurping the Louisville Cardinals among others with their latest addition.
