Leading Off...

An action-packed Thursday gave way to plenty of hotly contested action on the softball field.

There was no bigger win than Tennessee’s 2-1 victory over fifth-ranked Oklahoma. The 13th-ranked Volunteers were able to edge the Sooners out despite OU having stud pitcher Paige Parker on the mound. The Vols tagged her for two runs in the second inning and never looked back, maintaining a lead from that moment on.

Plenty of credit should be given to pitcher Caylan Arnold who went the distance and kept the OU offense stymied. Arnold still hasn’t given up a single earned run all year (the Sooners’ lone run was unearned following a throwing error) so to say that she’s been dominant may be an understatement. Chelsea Seggern, entering the day hitting just .200, did the damage with a two-RBI single in the second.

While other teams (LSU, in particular, who defeated New Mexico State and Bethune-Cookman by a combined score of 21-1) had high levels of success on Thursday, Georgia had a bad day at the office. The ‘Dawgs were shut out by BYU 4-0 and followed that up with a 10-5 defeat at the hands of fourth-ranked UCLA. The Bulldogs had been 12-0 to start the day and, evidently, were brought back to earth with Thursday’s performance.

Standouts include Texas A&M-Arizona, Mizzou-Washington and Tennessee-Utah.
