What happened yesterday

SEC baseball got back in action on Tuesday, and there was plenty of excitement to go around.

Perhaps the biggest result of the day came down in Jacksonville. The Florida Gators took a loss to unranked Jacksonville, falling 3-2 after allowing all three Jacksonville runs to cross in the bottom of the ninth inning. UF held on to a 2-0 lead heading into the final frame after scoring runs in the second and third innings. An error and fielder’s choice eventually brought home catcher Mike Rivera in the second, and then a sacrifice groundout would bring Dalton Guthrie across home.

Pitchers Frank Rubio and Andrew Baker couldn’t preserve the lead, ultimately leading to it coming undone and resulting in a rare tally in the loss column. Amazingly, this was the first midweek loss for the Gators since 2015, per UF’s Athletics page.

That would prove to be the only significant upset of the day. While Georgia fell 6-5 to Mercer, that’s not quite on the scale of the No. 2 team in the country losing. The No. 4 team in the country meanwhile handled their business, as South Carolina 5-4 over Charlotte. The Gamecocks showed off their power as Jacob Olson and Alex Destino each bopped a home run en route to the win.

The Mississippi State Bulldogs are struggling to find their footing this year as they added a second loss to their season against Morehead State. It will take a lot for State to reorganize themselves for Friday’s game against Indiana State after the way MSU lost yesterday’s game. The Bulldogs found themselves ahead 8-3 until the top of the ninth, where the Eagles would score a mind-blowing 10 runs, which would go completely unanswered. The Bulldogs then fell to the Eagles in a shocking 8-13 loss Tuesday night.

Meanwhile, Ole Miss continued to maintain its undefeated record with an outstanding 16-4 win over the Arkansas State Red Wolves. With this victory the Rebels remain one of the few teams in the SEC to remain completely undefeated. This group of undefeated teams only includes Ole Miss, Texas A&M, and the Arkansas Razorbacks after the defeat of the Gators as well as the LSU Tigers on Tuesday night.
