The Vanderbilt Commodores have landed another elite prospect for the class of 2018. A few weeks after getting a commitment from point guard Darius Garland of Brentwood Academy (TN), Simisola Shittu has just committed to the ‘Dores. Shittu announced his decision on his Twitter account.
Shittu is a blue-chipper at the highest order, ranking 7th in the nation overall in 2018. He is the top-ranked power forward in the country and in the state of Vermont, where he attends the famed Vermont Academy in Saxtons River. The 6-foot-9, 220-pound Shittu now usurps Garland as the best recruit that Vanderbilt has landed since 247Sports began tracking recruits.
Vanderbilt now has a firm foundation for the future
It’s easy to say that when you get two five-stars in one recruiting class. But it’s true. Bryce Drew has set Vanderbilt up for huge successes down the road. Their class of Garland, Shittu and Aaron Nesmith is one of the best in the entire country and will pay serious dividends. Although the Commodores are losing Riley LaChance, Matthew Fisher-Davis and Jeff Roberson after this year, having those three (and maybe more) will cushion the blow. That, plus having Larry Austin Jr. and Notre Dame Fighting Irish transfer Matt Ryan will help out a lot, too.
Another elite recruit could be on the way, too
Bryce Drew might not be done quite yet. The Commodores are in play for New Albany, Indiana shooting guard Romeo Langford. There was talk after Garland’s commitment that Langford might come down the pipe, and now with Shittu aboard, getting him would put this class way over the top. There’s still a lot of time left until the Indiana shooting guard makes his commitment. But, Vandy may get another blue-chipper in the fold.
Vanderbilt - yes, VANDERBILT - has a Top 10 recruiting class
With Shittu in tow, Vanderbilt now ranks eighth among all classes in 2018 and third in the SEC behind the Kentucky Wildcats and LSU Tigers. The prospect of Vandy possibly having the top class in the SEC and Top 5 overall isn’t out of the question if they do, indeed, land Romeo Langford. That’s something you probably didn’t expect, was it?
