NCAA Basketball: Maui Invitational-Michigan at LSU Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

What Happened Yesterday

The LSU Tigers pulled off a bit of a stunner. Thanks to a tremendous effort by freshman Tremont Waters, the Tigers defeated the Michigan Wolverines in the first round of the Maui Invitational. Waters finished with 21 points on the night, and despite an absurd effort by Michigan (Moritz Wagner and Charles Matthews combined for 52 of the Wolverines’ 75 points) LSU got the duke.

Robert Williams was a highly touted freshman. Now he’s a highly touted sophomore, and he went off in his first game back from suspension. The Texas A&M Aggies trounced the Oklahoma State Cowboys, holding the Pokes to just 55 points to their 72. Williams had 11 points and 11 rebounds in his season debut, and D.J. Hogg starred again, scoring 18 with seven boards.

The Missouri Tigers barely escaped Emporia State 67-62. The news of MPJ’s season-ending injury certainly complicates things for Mizzou, who now have to go through the AdvoCare Invitational without their star freshman. And, well, everything else that awaits them, too.

The Kentucky Wildcats hung on to beat Troy 70-62. The game was never much in doubt, but a 20-point burst for the Trojans made things interesting down the stretch. UK could only muster nine points in the final 10 minutes of the game, but Troy’s shooting woes from outside - a 4-27 mark from 3 - plagued them in the end.

Mississippi State took care of Green Bay, winning 77-68. And finally, the Ole Miss Rebels lost to the Utah Utes at the MGM Main Event, 83-74.

Today’s Schedule

Time (ET) Game TV/Streaming
6 p.m. Penn State vs. Texas A&M ESPN2/WatchESPN
9 p.m. UT Arlington vs. Alabama SEC Network/WatchESPN
10:30 p.m. Notre Dame vs. LSU ESPN/WatchESPN

A lighter schedule awaits us tonight. You can see Collin Sexton and the Alabama Crimson Tide battle the UT Arlington Mavericks of the Sun Belt on SEC Network. Elsewhere, you can find Robert Williams, D.J. Hogg and the aforementioned Aggies look to clinch the Legends Classic against the Penn State Nittany Lions.

Later on, Tremont Waters and LSU aim to get to the Maui Invitational Final. To do that though, they’ll have to get through Bonzie Colson and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Even if they do conquer ND, Shaq Morris and a damn-good Wichita State Shockers team will await them in the final.
