5-star 2018 point guard Darius Garland commits to Vanderbilt

The Commodores get their best recruit... ever?

USA TODAY HSS

5-star point guard Darius Garland of Brentwood, Tennessee committed to the Vanderbilt Commodores on Monday afternoon. Garland’s commitment to Vandy gives the ‘Dores arguably their best recruit since 247Sports began tracking these sorts of things in the year 2000.

What’s more is that the ‘Dores won a recruiting battle over some of the big powerhouse programs in the country. The UCLA Bruins, Indiana Hoosiers, Kansas Jayhawks and Duke Blue Devils all were in on Garland at one point or another. Nevertheless, Bryce Drew pulled off quite the coup in getting the five-star point guard to come to Nashville instead of L.A., Bloomington, Lawrence or Durham.

Attention will now pivot towards what could come next for Vandy. Five-star guard Romeo Langford of New Albany, Indiana included the Commodores in his final three with Kansas and Indiana, as well. There’s also five-star Simisola Shittu of Vermont Academy, who has been linked to Vandy recently as well. If Drew pulls off getting all three along with 4-star Aaron Nesmith, Vandy is projected to have the best recruiting class in the country for 2018.

Yes, read that over multiple times if you want to: Vandy is projected to have the best recruiting class in the country for 2018 if they get Shittu and Langford to join Garland and Nesmith. Even having just Shittu would propel them to 5th in the nation as of right now. It’s crazy to think about, but Vandy’s prospects are looking good for the future.

Darius Garland is listed at 6-foot-1, 170 lbs. as he enters his senior season at Brentwood Academy. He ranks 10th among all 2018 prospects right now and is the No. 1 player in the state of Tennessee. He is the third-ranked point guard in the country, standing behind the likes of Tre Jones (Duke Blue Devils) and Immanuel Quickley (Kentucky Wildcats).
