The SEC announced Week 8’s Players of the Week on Monday.
The LSU Tigers’ star running back Derrius Guice claimed the Offensive Player of the Week award. Guice had a terrific day on the ground against the Ole Miss Rebels, going for 276 yards and a touchdown in the win. Guice became the first player in SEC history to record at least three games with 250 rushing yards or more on Saturday, adding to his already impressive college career.
On defense, we have Co-Defensive Players of the Week again. Alabama Crimson Tide defensive back Levi Wallace won DPOW for the second time this season after his work against the Tennessee Volunteers. Wallace had two sacks and six tackles in the blowout win over the Vols, helping to extend their win streak over their rivals to 11 games. Wallace’s DPOW award means that an Alabama player has won the award four times this season (Wallace, Minkah Fitzpatrick and Shaun Dion Hamilton).
Jeff Holland, meanwhile, picked up the award for the Auburn Tigers this week. Holland had 1.5 sacks, 1.5 TFL, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery and three tackles in the Tigers’ blowout win over the Arkansas Razorbacks. To say he was integral in the victory would be an understatement with that line and effort. Jeff Holland is the first Auburn Tiger to win the Defensive Player of the Week award this season.
LSU placekicker Connor Culp is this week’s recipient of the SEC Special Teams Player of the Week. Culp went 4-4 on field goals and made one as long as 47 yards in the win over Ole Miss.
We have co-Freshmen of the Week as Auburn defensive lineman Nick Coe and Missouri Tigers tight end Albert Okwuegbunam are the winners this week. Coe’s second Freshman of the Week honors come after racking up six tackles, 0.5 sack and 0.5 TFL in the win over Arkansas. Okwuegbunam meanwhile starred in Mizzou’s rout of the Idaho Vandals, catching three touchdown passes.
This week’s Linemen of the week were Mississippi State Bulldogs guard Deion Calhoun and defensive end Montez Sweat.
