What Happened Last Night
- Marquette 89, Georgia 79: Oh, this one hurts for Georgia. After losses to Clemson and Kansas in November, the Bulldogs had another chance to pick up a quality win... and blew it thanks to Marquette shooting 13-of-29 from three. Yante Maten had 24 points, JJ Frazier had 22 points and 7 assists, but the Bulldogs let Marquette hit too many threes and get too many second chances (15 offensive rebounds.) And now, Georgia is basically out of chances for a quality win in non-conference play; yes, they play at Georgia Tech and host Texas in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge at the end of January, but neither of those teams seems likely to move the needle much (though Texas could turn it around.)
- South Carolina 70, FIU 54: The Gamecocks didn’t have Sindarius Thornwell — who was suspended prior to the game for an unspecified violation of athletic department policy — but it didn’t really matter in this game. South Carolina held the opposition under a point per possession for the seventh game in a row, and in Thornwell’s absence, Duane Notice (27 points on 9-of-14 shooting) and PJ Dozier (20 points, 7 rebounds, 4 steals) simply stepped up their games.
- Mississippi State 82, Georgia State 60: This was actually pretty impressive, and at full strength Mississippi State looks... a ton better than they did without Quinndary Weatherspoon. Weatherspoon himself had 14 points, but that was outdone by career highs from freshmen Lamar Peters (24 points on 9-of-12 shooting, 6 boards, 4 assists) and Mario Kegler (16 points.)
Tonight’s Schedule
Only one game tonight, as Texas A&M hosts Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (that’s a mouthful.) The Islanders picked up their first loss of the season at Cal Poly on Saturday, and they’re 5-1 on the season -- granted, two wins came against non-Division I competition and two more came against UT-Rio Grande Valley, and the Aggies are clearly the best team they’ve faced this season. Tip time is 8:00 PM ET, with coverage on the SEC Network+ and WatchESPN.
There won’t be a line on this game so no picks tonight, I know you were waiting to see how badly I could do on those.
