The Worst SEC Football Opponents of Week 1: Eagles, Vandals, Jackrabbits and Sleepless Coaches

Cupcake games: Athletics directors love the sugary sweet treats but fans despise them. So we're not going to give the teams that play them credit in our previews, instead offering a fun fact about the cupcake in question. Consider it our silent and likely futile protest

Tennessee-Martin vs. Kentucky, Noon ET, SEC Network
UTM's stadium is named after a donor, but their field is named after H.K. Grantham. Why? Because at one point, Grantham basically ran the entire place by himself.

Grantham was the coach of the football, baseball, and men’s basketball teams. He also headed the department of physical education and served as director of athletics.

If there is hope for Vanderbilt that someone in the SEC were surpass their face-plant, after the Commodores surpassed South Carolina's face-plant, this would be the game. Sorry, 'Dores. Kentucky 24, Tennessee-Martin 13

South Dakota State vs. Missouri, 3:30 p.m. ET, ESPNU
Their Jackrabbit mascot looks a little weird, but at least he's available to do events at a reasonable rate. Missouri 48, South Dakota State 10

Idaho vs. Florida, 7 p.m. ET, ESPNU
(Yes, I realize the hazards of putting any Florida game here. Moving on.) "Don’t use your dictionary to find Idaho’s definition of a Vandal," Idaho's website advises. Okay, so what does it mean?

No, Idaho’s student-athletes go by a name earned nearly a century ago by a basketball team coached by Hec Edmundson, whose teams played defense with such intensity and ferocity that sports writers said they "vandalized" their opponents

You could be forgiven for being confused about how this is different from one of the dictionary definitions of vandal, i.e. "a person who vandalizes something." You could also be forgiven for being confused by the fact that an alternative definition listed by Idaho comes word for word from -- the dictionary. Florida 37, Idaho 3

Southern Miss vs. Mississippi State, 7:30 p.m. ET, SEC Network
Just a few years ago, the Golden Eagles would not have warranted placement in this post. But going 1-23 over the course of two seasons changes things. In any case, that gives us an opportunity to apologize to Auburn for making fun of the Tiger/Eagle thing, given that Southern Miss has been known at various times as the Tigers, the Normalites, the Yellow Jackets, the Confederates, the Southerners and the Miners. Mississippi State 45, Southern Miss 17
