NCAA Baseball Tournament: Chapel Hill Super Regional Postponed

It's not clear how long the delay is going to last, but prospects for today don't look good. And that could help the home team ever so slightly

USA TODAY Sports

UPDATE: Game 1 has been postponed until Saturday.

- -

The Chapel Hill Super Regional between South Carolina and UNC, scheduled to start at 1 p.m. ET today, will be delayed. How long? Well, um, we don't know. Tropical storms are unpredictable like that.

First pitch, which was originally scheduled for 1:05 p.m., will now be no earlier than 3 p.m. Tournament officials will continue to evaluate the situation and will provide another update later today.

(Fun note: South Carolina and N.C. State essentially played a football game in a tropical storm once. It was not a thing of beauty. Football games between South Carolina and N.C. State never are.)

That other update will presumably come before 3 p.m., but there's no real guarantee of that. The Weather Channel forecast expects things to slacken up after 4 p.m. -- only to start again around 6 p.m. and continue until after midnight. That could effectively wash Game 1 out until Saturday afternoon, when the chance of rain sharply drops off around 4 p.m.

As one of our commenters noted, this would be good news for North Carolina, which was about ready to start warming up Roy Williams when its game against FAU finally came to an end early Tuesday morning. Whether the pitching staff has already recharged, or whether it could use the extra day to recover a little more, is a question that might only be answered when these teams start playing again. Whenever that is.
