Tyrann Mathieu will not be playing any football this fall, as Fox 8 New Orleans is reporting that he will instead spend "the near future" at a Right Step drug rehab center in Houston. He has been there since Monday, and he will be mentored by former NBA player and coach John Lucas. Lucas himself went through drug issues between his playing and coaching days.
At first, I wasn't sure if this report could be believed given the generally horrid track record of local news stations when it comes to breaking news. The station has talked with Mathieu's father Tyrone, though, who is supporting his son's attempt at getting clean. The family all agrees that football will take care of itself once Mathieu gets himself right.
Les Miles kicked Mathieu off of the team back on the 10th for an unspecified breach of team policy. Rumors have swirled ever since that it was a third failed drug test that led to the dismissal; Mathieu missed a game last fall after a positive test. Hopefully Mathieu will come through this a better person on the other side.
