Cupcake Wars: Tongues in Beaks, the Greatest City in the World and a Video Defying Description

New, comments

Cupcakes. Everybody plays them. But we don't want to give anybody credit for doing so. That's why we're lumping them all into one small post and giving you a fun fact about any bad midmajors or FCS teams playing SEC teams each week. Call it our silent, and likely futile, protest. All games are Saturday unless otherwise noted.

Jerome Miron-US PRESSWIRE

Western Carolina vs. Alabama, 12:21 p.m. ET, SEC Network: Western Carolina's nickname is the Catamount, which is basically a bobcat. It was either that or a squirrel. In something unrelated to football, a WCU player was the first to hit a three-pointer in college basketball. Alabama 62, Western Carolina 0

Jacksonville State vs. Florida, 1 p.m. ET, PPV: If you really want to learn about why Jacksonville State decided to go with "Gamecocks," be prepared to endure many, many bird puns. Like:

Tongue firmly planted in beak, Gamecock supporters crowed the loudest, and the University found itself with a new identity: a mascot familiar to everyone, including the farm boys who comprised most of the student body back then.

There will not be much crowing for Jacksonville State on Saturday. Florida 34, Jacksonville State 3

Wofford vs. South Carolina, 1 p.m. ET, PPV: Fisher DeBerry is in the Terriers Hall of Fame. Really, that's about the best I can do. South Carolina 31, Wofford 13

Georgia Southern vs. Georgia, 1:30 p.m. ET, PPV: Georgia Southern is one of the few teams I'm aware of that has an official app that actually appears to be worth downloading. Oh, yeah, and Erk Russell was once a head coach in Statesboro. Georgia 48, Georgia Southern 13

Alabama A&M vs. Auburn, 2 p.m. ET, PPV: Well, Auburn is ... oh, I'm sorry about that. Alabama A&M is the cupcake in this game. Alabama A&M is located in what is quite simply one of the greatest cities in the world. What more do you need to know? Auburn 28, Alabama A&M 20

Sam Houston State vs. Texas A&M, 3:30 p.m. ET, PPV: This one goes on the theory that any bizarre warning label that you read has to have come from someone actually doing something that stupid. In this case, SHSU's tailgaiting policies include this: "Open flames are allowed, but must be extinguished prior to entering the stadium." Your guess is as good as mine. Texas A&M 70, Sam Houston State 24

Samford vs. Kentucky, 7:30 p.m. ET, CSS:

That is all. Kentucky 34, Samford 17
