One State fan on fancred caught up with coach Mullen on the Road Dawgs tour, and Mullen told him that he and Meyer had caught a Buffett concert together recently. There's really nothing groundbreaking here, just the fact that I would have been interested to see those two together at the concert, hopefully singing "cheeseburger in paradise" at the top of their lungs.
Tend to agree with him. What do you guys think? Is this a whole new deal for the Big Ten?
My favorite line? "The question I have is, do we have that dynamic player on offense?" said Meyer. "Where's the Ted Ginns of the world? Were they hiding [last] year? I hope we have those guys. That's a big concern of mine right now." Using Ted Ginn as an example shows a certain awareness and appreciation for Ohio State's history. When Lane Kiffin began working at Tennessee, he decorated the Volunteer athletic complex with memorabilia and references from his time at USC. It was disrespectful to Tennessee, which owns an impressive athletic tradition in its own right. Urban Meyer, so far, has deliberately avoided any such digs at his predecessors.
The Plain Dealer, and a few other news agencies, met with the new Ohio State head coach this morning and asked him a range of questions about the new era of Buckeye football. Part I is linked above. Part II is linked here. Choice bits: - Fickell, Stan Drayton Jr., and Taver Johnson have been confirmed as returning. Drayton will coach running backs. - Mike Vrabel is on a try-out period. Word is that Meyer wants to see his fire on the recruiting trail. - Meyer defended Jim Tressel and said that, even though he wasn't here, he would "fight that," that being the perception of Tressel and Ohio State as cheaters. - Admitted that he handled the transition from Tebow to Brantley poorly at Florida. Hopes he can learn from it here. - Considering a no-huddle offense, but it sounds like it's too far outside of his comfort zone. If he's not entirely on board, I would argue against it vociferously. A no-huddle tempo is not just an offensive decision, but a program one. It changes how the defense practices and plays.
Should have added that story also has notes on Paul Haynes' new job, and Taylor Graham will transfer.
— Ken Gordon (@kgdispatch) December 10, 2011
Ken Gordon of the Columbus Dispatch is reporting that Taylor Graham was granted a release from Ohio State, freeing up a scholarship and leaving Ohio State with only two scholarship quarterbacks on the roster. Graham is a prototypical pocket-passer and was not a good fit for Urban Meyer's spread offense. Cardale Jones, a prep quarterback from Glenville, will join this class if his grades shake out. Meyer is also looking at another quarterback, Florida State commitment Jameis Winston, and possibly a yet-to-be-named transfer from another BCS school, whom we think is Jeff Driskel.
It's official. Chad Morris, despite overtures from Urban Meyer and Ohio State, is no longer a candidate for the offensive coordinator job. Morris signed an incredible contract with Clemson, worth $1.3 million annually for six years. According to The Post and Courier, it's a record for an ACC assistant coach. After only one season at Clemson, Morris cashed in, and it's at least partially due to Urban Meyer. If Meyer is not hired as Ohio State's head coach, and does not have Ohio State's pocketbook to make overtures with, Morris is probably a lot cheaper for Clemson to retain. The hunt for Greg Studrawa now takes on greater importance.
Bud Elliot, who runs Tomahawk Nation and SB Nation Recruiting, and I had a discussion yesterday regarding Urban Meyer and the impact he may have upon Ohio State recruiting. It's up on SB Nation's main page. Of importance: 1. Meyer plans to honor all current commitments. He must, or he risks upsetting the Ohio High School Coaches Association. 2. Offensive line is the big focus right now. Meyer is going after Wisconsin commit Kyle Dodson and Notre Dame commit Taylor Decker. 3. Joel Caleb visits this weekend. If Meyer can pull him, he may have found his next Percy Harvin.
He may have done some things after that as well... Per his agent, Urban Meyer has accepted the position as head coach of The Ohio State University. He comes to Ohio State after having last coached at Florida. Here's my question: considering his inability to stay in any job for more than five years, how long do we think Meyer will be at tOSU? I'll set the over-under at six, and I'm playing the under.
Even before Urban Meyer takes the job, he's pulling in recruits. 5-star defensive end Adolphus Washington has committed to Ohio State and stated that he believes Urban Meyer will be his head coach.
I will bet that tOSU gets minimal penalties from the NCAA...Myer would not take the job without it.
