Killing a Culture: Why the NCAA Did the Right Thing With Penn State

The NCAA's decision to deal with the Penn State matter was the right call. Here's why.

The NCAA Had to Hammer Penn State

The NCAA needed to do something about Penn State, and the board of directors gave Mark Emmert broad authority to act.

SBN Coverage of the Freeh Report on Penn State

The Freeh Report on Penn State is out. It's very long and I don't have time to read it this morning, so if you're interested in it, this SBNation.com post is a good place to start. Long story short: the entire leadership at Penn State, up to and including the board of directors, seriously fouled up everything surrounding the Jerry Sandusky scandal beginning in 1998. If the report is truly accurate, and there's no reason to think it's not, Joe Paterno's reputation is now officially and justifiably tarnished.

Joe Paterno Has Passed Away

Joe Paterno has passed away after a brief battle with lung cancer. He was 85. It's sad that he will now be remembered as much for what he didn't do (in the Sandusky scandal) as what he did (legendary coach and devoted donor to his school), but such are the consequences of our choices in life.

Penn State Coaching Mess Getting Worse Due to Out of Touch Former Players

Penn State had a difficult coaching search in ending up with Bill O'Brien, but out of touch former players are only making things worse.

Mark Richt's Name Coming Up for Penn State Job

Mark Richt's name is now being connected to the Penn State job. Is it wishful thinking from Nittany Lions, or is it negotiating leverage for Richt's extension at Georgia?

AP source: #PennSt football coach Joe Paterno has decided to retire at end of the season

He's gone There was never any doubt in my mind that, whenever it was that Joe Paterno was going to leave coaching, he was going to try to do it on his own terms. He knows he can't go beyond this year now, so he's going to retire rather than be pushed out. Of course, nothing is stopping Penn State from pushing him out now for his inaction regarding Jerry Sandusky. Then again, the people who would do the pushing (the AD and president) are in worse shape right now. UPDATE Paterno has issued a statement.

Alabama 24, Penn State 3: That'll Do

Alabama clears the hurdle against Penn State, but it was not an eye-popping win.

Quarterbacks and the NFL

College coaches should try to help their players get to the NFL, but winning games is their top priority.

NCAA's Response to FSU

cocknfire has been keeping track of the legal wrangling over the NCAA's response to FSU's appeal of sanctions over its massive academic fraud scandal. The Tallahassee Democrat has posted a copy of it online for your reading pleasure. The most important thing in it is that the NCAA plans to uphold the vacating wins penalty (unlike with Oklahoma a few years back), putting Bobby Bowden 15 wins behind Joe Paterno. Other teams are hurt by that too (I understand it removes two national titles for the track team, correct me if I'm wrong), but that's where most of the focus will be, The money quote: "The committee said the conduct of Florida State staff members involved in the cheating scandal was reprehensible and said such harsh penalties are appropriate when the academic mission of the university has been compromised."
