Nate Silver weighs in again

The verdict? Rutgers isn't PSU or Nebraska in terms of national draw, but they have the biggest NYC foothold. In terms of overall support, it's very competitive nationally, but would be in a tier with Illinois and Minnesota in the Big Ten. Fair enough. His data also shows that Rutgers fares pretty well comparatively with the other expansion options. I have two objections to the piece though: 1. Rutgers has less fans than Nebraska for instance, but those 938k Rutgers fans will have a much higher income than 1.23m Nebraska fans, and hence will be far more valuable as a television audience. 2. The assertion that the Eastern schools would "quality of the average Big Ten football game" isn't really backed up by evidence. Maryland, sure, now, but they aren't that far removed from being successful, and are just a good hire away from improving. Rutgers on the other hand would be better than the mean Big Ten team by most statistical metrics. P.S. For more on Nate Silver, click here.

UMD to B1G in One FanShot

Welp, there goes the party. Looks like we'll be adding UConn, and ACC football will keep getting sadder. UPDATE 4:58PM: I called it. The ACC is looking at Big East teams to replace Maryland.

Step Into The Champaign Room

Good friend Joe Kutsunis of Hail to the Orange invited me to appear on his Champaign Room podcast last night to discuss the state of college football realignment.

The University of Nebraska has been voted out of the AAU.

The Association of American Universities' members voted to end UNL's membership recently based on the university's inability to meet certain requirements, Chancellor Harvey Perlman said in an email to faculty and staff Friday. The vote required a two-thirds majority of the group's 62 other members. [Update - Since it appears that many Big Ten fans (alumni) are coming to CN to reference the article above, I'd like you to also take a look an article from the Chronicle of Higher Education that states: What put Nebraska at a particular disadvantage within the AAU is that the university's medical school is part of the statewide system, but not part of the flagship Lincoln campus. So the medical school's research dollars do not count toward Lincoln's AAU numbers. In an analysis conducted last year by The Chronicle, Nebraska's system as a whole outpaces at least 11 current AAU members.

The Name Game: Propose Names for the Big 10's Divisions

Only because there's some really good suggestions here.....

Discarded Big Ten Division Names - Maize n Brew

SB Nation's Michigan site is Maize N Brew - might as well start getting used to the Big Ten sites, if you haven't already.

Nebraska is joining a league whose hubris equals their own.

They are calling their divisions "Legends" and "Leaders." Does anything more really need to be said? The "Classiest Fans in the Nation" will fit in quite well.

Big Ten Decides 12 Schools is Enough

The Big Ten's Council of Presidents/Chancellors met today and determined that the process of expansion that began last December is now complete. The Big Ten will focus on the integration of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and "will not be actively engaged in conference expansion for the foreseeable future."

Source: No divisions for basketball

I reported this one for 670TheScore.com so the link takes you there. All I can say is thank goodness. Having Ohio State, Wisconsin, Purdue, Illinois and Indiana in the same division would completely contradict the competitive balance of the football divisions.

How Nebraska to the Big Ten came to be

A great, behind-the-scenes look at how the Nebraska-Big Ten marriage happened. As with so many of these deals, sometimes you just need a bit of luck and timing to make things fall into place.
