As experts predicted, ESPN will pay $80m/year for the Champions Bowl per SBD this morning. Same money as Rose Bowl.

From ESPN's Kristi Dosh It's odd to see ESPN's sports business reporter passing on a report on ESPN by the Sports Business Daily, but the big four-letter really does keeps its business and journalism sides separate. Anyway, this is a huge payday for just one bowl game. If the pot gets split up evenly all around, that's $40 million to each conference, $4 million to each Big 12 school, and $2.86 million to each SEC school. Incidentally, that kind of math is what argues against Big 12 expansion in the future.

#Big12's Chuck Neinas told @1049TheHorn a colleague in the #SEC told him, "Don't expand beyond 12 because 14 becomes unruly."

From Chip Brown This quote could mean something or it could mean nothing depending on just who this "colleague" is. Don't bet on ever finding out this colleague's identity, though. As much as anything, Neinas is probably just trying to keep the conference's expansion cards close to the vest. For one thing, he likely won't be making any real decisions because incoming, non-interim commissioner Bob Bowlsby should be taking the lead on the issue. For another, things can get out of hand quickly. The real lesson the conference has apparently learned from the SEC is to go slowly and do everything you can to make it look like your expansion targets approached you, not the other way around.

TAMU to SEC in a holding pattern this morning. Invite contingent on the Big 12 schools promising not to sue SEC. Baylor still holding out.

Tony Barnhart on the Texas A&M situation Baylor's lawsuit threats are apparently all that's holding up the official announcement of the Texas A&M move to the SEC. The reason is likely because they don't have some kind of standing invitation to another power conference if the Big 12 goes away. Texas, TTU, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State can go to the Pac-12. Missouri is reportedly high on the SEC's list of candidates for the 14th school. The Kansas schools almost certainly have standing Big East invites, and Iowa State had one back in summer of 2010 (so it might have one now). Baylor doesn't have anywhere to go but the MW or CUSA, so it's going to do whatever it can to keep the Big 12 around.

"I think Tuberville and his staff are a little scary," one Big 12 assistant coach said. "They are really doing a great job in the state of Texas. He has brought that SEC mentality of grinding and grinding when it comes to recruiting. They are a lot tougher than I thought they would be and it's certainly different then [former coach Mike] Leach and his staff."

Tommy Tuberville Scares Someone in the Big 12 You can take the Riverboat Gambler out of the SEC, but apparently you can't take the SEC out of the Riverboat Gambler. This just strikes me as funny because having someone with an actual work ethic regarding recruiting at Texas Tech is enough to spook someone else in the Big 12. If they think his recruiting is scary, just wait until they find out about how he rode out of Mississippi in a pine box to take the job at Auburn. (H/T: DTN)
