DirecTV and SEC Very Very Very Close to a Deal

2

Obviously, nothing is done until the contract is signed and the two sides have nailed down all the details. But the rates were always going to be the biggest part of the battle, and if those are done, then the likeliest outcome is that DirecTV will carry the SEC Network starting Aug. 14. From the looks of things, even the biggest providers will bring the network to more than 80 million consumers, which is a great number for a launch. We'll probably get a fuller picture, with the smaller regional providers thrown in, when the SEC and DirecTV announce a final deal.

Dennis Dodd's Very Weird Penn State Column

I don't really break down the columns of sportswriters much any more, because everyone's entitled to their own opinion. But one of the few non-SEC matters that I've taken a pretty strong position...

Mississippi State coaches had a costume party recently, and Dan Mullen went as everyone's favorite groundskeeper. Gopher and stained shirt included.

New SEC Network Commercial with Johnny Cash

1

ESPN running the SEC Network means its commercials are going to be top notch. Here's a brand new one featuring Johnny Cash and a not-so subtle reminder that coaches, and not players, are the true stars of college football.

Cox Cable Picks Up the SEC Network

2

We're a little over a month away from the SEC Network launch, so it's getting to be crunch time for the carriage deals. Today the network announced that it has added Cox, the nation's third largest cable company, to its lineup. Comcast, Time Warner, and DirecTV are the big fish still pending, but the pressure on them will only mount as others give in and take on the channel.

Star Wars: Retribution

+

This is awesome. It's hard to believe that Mark Richt condoned, much less took part in this, given all the injury potential involved and the Bulldogs' luck last year -- but we're glad he did. Kudos to Chris Conley for pulling it off. It's far better than, say, Transformers 4. And the best news is, it leaves room for a future sequel.

5 SEC Players Made Bruce Feldman's Freaks List

1

Bruce Feldman put out his annual list of college football's athletic freaks, and five SEC players made it. All of them are in the top 11 selections, including the top overall.

Spurrier Can't Help but Talk About Alabama

+

Every school is different. For example, at Alabama, if I had had five No. 1 recruiting classes in the last six years like Alabama, I would say, ‘Fellas we are going to mess up if we lose a game, because we’ve got the best players in college football.’ But we’re not in that situation.

Spurrier can't help himself Again, for the second time recently. You can tell it bothers him when people recognize someone else as the SEC's best coach.

Steve Spurrier Doesn't Think Nick Saban Is Very Good

3

... if you wanted to, you can find faults with anybody if they don’t win them all. How many SECs has (Saban) won there in eight years? He’s won two. He’s won three nationals, but he’s only won two SECs in eight years. Now, if you had the No. 1 recruiting class every year and so forth, I don’t know if he has maxed out potentially as well as he could.

Kentucky Once Talked to ACC About Membership

If you've ever thought that Kentucky kind of feels like an ACC program in the SEC, you're not alone. Former UK AD C.M. Newton thought so too, and he talked with the ACC about joining in the early '90s. (via Mark Ennis)

Did Nick Saban Give Jets Playbook to the Patriots?

It's worth noting before we get into the latest rather bizarre bit of gossip surrounding Nick Saban that the New England Patriots beat Mike Pettine regularly and badly when he was the defensive...

A Useful Reminder

+

There's been a lot of merriment from the Twitter community -- self included -- over some of the statements made by witnesses in the O'Bannon case. But it's worth keeping in mind that the lawsuit isn't playing out in the court of public opinion, and however absurd the statements might sound or not sound to us, it doesn't really matter. The only person who has to believe or not believe something is the judge; if she buys or doesn't buy what's being said, she'll rule accordingly. (And that will lay some of the groundwork for when the case is heard on appeal.) What's better for one side legally is often not what sounds best in the public arena.
