2014 NCAA Baseball Tournament: Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns 9, Ole Miss Rebels 5

Peter G. Aiken-USA TODAY Sports

Louisiana-Lafayette crushes two home runs and takes a lead in the super regional. Ole Miss faces elimination Sunday

If you want to know the approximate moment that the game between Louisiana-Lafayette and Ole Miss ended, it was about the time that Dylan Butler smashed a home run over the left field wall, giving the Ragin' Cajuns a 9-4 that the Rebels never even really came close to endangering. Yes, that was only the fifth inning and yes, Ole Miss technically still had the opportunity to play its way back into the game -- but for all practical purposes, it was pretty clear at that point that this was not going to be the Rebels' night.

It's not that ULL outslugged Ole Miss by that much -- the Cajuns had 11 hits to the Rebels' 10, and both teams drew just three walks. But Louisiana-Lafayette "capitalized," whether you believe that's really a skill or not, and Ole Miss didn't. In additional to Butler's home run, there was the three-run shot by Tyler Girouard. Meanwhile, Cajuns pitcher Austin Robichaux kept the Rebels at bay just well enough to make sure the game was largely out of reach.

Super regionals are three-game series, and Stanford showed today that it just takes one good game to put a team back in contention for Omaha. But for now, the series is still in Louisiana-Lafayette's favor, and the Cajuns looked on Saturday night like a team that was playing like it was destined for Omaha.
