SEC Tournament Day 2 Results: Missouri, South Carolina Advance

Kevin C. Cox

The Tigers and Gamecocks won their games from the early shift.

In the first game of the day, Missouri needed two overtimes to finally put away Texas A&M 91-83.

Mizzou did just fine in the first half, as it built up an eight-point lead by halftime. The lead stayed roughly around there until TAMU was finally able to slowly chip it down over the final six minutes. The Tigers had a chance to win it on the final possession of regulation, but they turned it over instead. MU might have had it put away at the end of the first overtime too, but Blake McDonald stole an inbounds pass under the bucket. He then passed it to Alex Caruso, who tied it up with eight seconds to go. The Aggies only managed to score two points in the first 4:30 of the second overtime, with the drought ultimately doing them in.

Caruso led all scorers with 28, while Jabari Brown put in 26 and Earnest Ross had 24 for Mizzou. Johnathan Williams also had 11 points and 15 rebounds for the Tigers. Missouri, and whatever's left of the team's legs, will play top seeded Florida tomorrow.

In the day's second game, South Carolina sniped a 71-69 win away from Arkansas.

The game was close throughout, with Carolina's largest lead being six and Arkansas's being four. The game ended in somewhat of a strange way. The Razorbacks scored their final points with 2:18 to go, taking a 69-66 lead. The Gamecocks then inched forward, scoring five points on five trips to the free throw line from then on to wind up with the final score. Arkansas had chances, including a desperation heave that clanked off the iron, but it could seal the deal.

Sindarius Thornwell led all scorers with 17, while Coty Clarke led Arkansas with 13. The Hogs were a cold 3-14 (21.4%) from three, while South Carolina was a pretty good 5-12 (41.7%) there.

The Gamecocks, who are putting on quite the nice season-ending run for Frank Martin, will advance to play Tennessee tomorrow. Arkansas, meanwhile, is probably now on the wrong side of the bubble. Losing two straight to Alabama and South Carolina in your final two games is not the way you impress the committee.
