Mississippi St. Bulldogs 24, Arkansas Razorbacks 17 (OT): It Will Have To Do

Justin Ford-USA TODAY Sports

There wasn't much pretty about MSU's overtime victory against the Hogs, but it keeps their one remaining goal on the table

Dan Mullen can add another to his list of accomplishments at Mississippi State, though it might not be one that he wants to brag about it too loudly. Mullen became the first coach in Bulldogs' history to beat Arkansas in its home state, a sloppy 24-17 overtime victory that reminded everyone why MSU is struggling to become bowl-eligible and why the Hogs could end up winless in the SEC.

The teams combined for five turnovers in this one, along with a series of bizarre decisions on whether to punt the ball back, go for it on fourth down or try a fake punt. The yardage for both teams was pretty decent -- not great, but decent -- but it still somehow felt like a sluggish affair more to be endured than enjoyed. For a game that was tied roughly half the time, it wasn't very engrossing.

Still, it did two very important things for Mississippi State: Got an Arkansas-sized monkey off its back and kept the Bulldogs alive in the bowl picture, needing a win against Ole Miss next week to clinch a postseason berth. A win is always a win is always a win, but that was particularly true for the Bulldogs on Saturday.
