Florida Gators vs. South Carolina Gamecocks Football Preview: Something Left to Prove

Jeremy Brevard-USA TODAY Sports

This is a game that could decide South Carolina's fate in the SEC East race, and whether some other historic streaks continue as well

As if this game needed any more important for South Carolina, it can also continue a couple of Steve Spurrier's record-breaking streaks at South Carolina. South Carolina had never gone 6-2 in the SEC when Spurrier arrived; it's now done so for the last two years. The Gamecocks had never posted three winning SEC seasons in a row; the have already locked up that streak for a fourth consecutive year and could add to the margin tonight. And given that the only remaining opponents are Coastal Carolina and Clemson, South Carolina would all but lock up a 10-plus-win season for the third straight year at a program that had one before Spurrier's tenure.

But all that is secondary for South Carolina right now. Beating Florida is basically a necessity for the Gamecocks to stay alive in the SEC East. Technically, they could still win the division after a loss in this game, but the combination of events that would require is so likely as to make it almost pointless to mention. A win here is required.

And everything points toward one. The already-hamstrung Gators are likely down to quarterback Skyler Mornhinweg on the depth chart under center; South Carolina is at home; Florida is coming off a four-game losing streak that includes last week's loss to Vanderbilt at home. The visiting team appears to be playing out the string on a lost season, but South Carolina still has a lot of things to play for.

South Carolina 34, Florida 13
