Georgia CB Branden Smith Won't Be Suspended After All

We were all expecting to see Branden Smith miss the opener as a first time offender under the Georgia drug policy after a marijuana possession arrest. Turns out, he won't miss time after all. UPDATE 8/6 Thanks to AuditDawg who posted a link to the UGA student athlete handbook in the comments today. I wasn't aware that it was public information previously. It specifically states on Page 18 that, "Alcohol or Drug related arrests or citations are violations of UGAAA policies that include automatic competition suspension, education, counseling, and community service." That sentence is underlined in the policy itself. Page 25 reveals that a first substance abuse violation yields a suspension of at least 10% of the season. Hence, the widespread expectation that Smith would miss time. However, directly underneath that it says, "[i]n some misdemeanor cases, the Head Coach will be responsible for imposing whatever discipline measures he/ she deems appropriate". I guess that's what applied here.
