The Aggies cruise past the Tigers in a game that continues to raise the question of how long Gene Chizik can hang onto his job
It's hard to know where to start with Johnny Manziel anymore. In what would end up being rout for Texas A&M, Johnny Football was 16-of-23 for 260 yards and two touchdowns and added 90 yards and three more scores on the ground as the Aggies rolled to a 63-21 win against Auburn.
It's also hard to know where to start with Auburn anymore. The Tigers gave up 671 yards of total offense and 34 first downs to A&M. One TAMU drive ended in a punt. The Aggies rushed for more yards (352) than Auburn amassed in total offense (335). Jonathan Wallace (6-of-9, 122 yards and two touchdowns passing; 71 yards rushing on 13 carries) might have been a revelation, but he became a factor too late in this game and far too late in the season to do Auburn any good.
The loss is No. 7 for Auburn, meaning that any hopes of a postseason berth for Gene Chizik and his team are gone. There's also the question of how long this will be Gene Chizik's team; given the margin of this game and the end of any chance at a bowl, the Auburn administration could decide at any moment that it's better to cut their losses. (It would be rather cruel to do that this week, given everything else that has happened to Chizik, but the decision could be made after a proper distance has been observed.)
For Texas A&M, the season still has a fair amount of possibility left in it. The SEC West is probably out of reach -- the chances of LSU and Alabama losing two games aren't great -- but a nine-win season is certainly not out of the question. In fact, anything less than an eight-win season at this point would require a colossal collapse.
That's not bad for a team that many pegged to be the least impressive of the two Big 12 immigrants this season. As it turns out, they're going to be much more impressive than some of the teams that were in the SEC West to begin with -- starting with the team they demolished Saturday night.
